Cognitive Dissonance. Twitter was popular, so they went all-in and now depend on it's reach for their audience; so now twitter being not popular, or a den of nazis, or having wildly inflated engagement numbers, or actually hurting the reputation of those still there - that's unthinkable. It's literally impossible to contemplate, as that would involve admitting they got duped, and don't *really* have a million followers, and are supporting thugs, etc etc.
(Insert image of "it's fine" dog sitting in burning building.)
Well - that's why said when and where.
The OP talked about going "upstate" - I'm guessing east coast US, which like much of Europe *really* wasn't designed with modern automobiles in mind. I can see it being a severe chore in those places.
But - I live in the US southwest, where everything is designed with the automobile in mind. Good weather 90% of the time, mostly modern wide highways, and trains are a very limited, inconvenient option. We go driving for pleasure - you just need to avoid a few well-known ugly high traffic areas - like the airports and big train stations in city centers. And when you arrive - you don't need to rent a car like you would if flying, you already have your own.
I keep thinking about people who *like to cook* - it looks like a lot of work to me. But they seem to enjoy it, and doing it yourself does mean a lot more choice...
Neil likes to turn that wan right up to 11.

I'm confused how AWS charging $4 monthly for an EIP pushes anyone into route53 - what am I missing?
It's probably worth noting this brings them into parity with Azure who already charge that, and is half of the $8 Google cloud charges for a public IP. IPv4 addresses are becoming a very scarce commodity; as much as I dislike paying, I understand why they're implementing it. I wonder if any of the smaller cloud providers still provide them free of charge...
Pity you can't ban them from the channel entirely since clearly they seem to be so disappointed with it.
Hint for anyone feeling the need to correct someone *anywhere*: maybe don't. But if you must, remember the three "P"s: Politely, Privately, and with Praise for what they do. If you don't have a good thing to say, you're not helping with corrections, you're just being an asshole.
Liam: I really enjoy the info you share. You're consistently an excellent source of news and info, and I appreciate the work you put in. Well done, carry on!
"Driving is work" depends very much on what you're driving and where. Driving can give you a freedom to see the country rather than just pass thru it. It offers an opportunity to get off of the beaten track and change plans spontaneously that simply don't exist otherwise. My family once made a spontaneous detour to the Grand Canyon just after it snowed that was magical - it would never have happened had we not been driving.
As the ancients said: "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."
The folks at wiz.io put together a really good paper on #k8s security. Check it out: https://www.wiz.io/blog/key-takeaways-from-the-wiz-2023-kubernetes-security-report #infosec
"The web" is ambiguous, and includes things arguably worse. I'm looking at you, Facebook, but you're far from the only offender.
So - concrete suggestions that are stable, free, and longlived?
I'll start - I'm a fan of pages.github.com. Free, stable, and yes now owned by Microsoft but I'll let that slide for now. Or, you know, a github repo.
What other options are *good* places to host community content?

Hard agree. Yubikeys are as good, but they come without all the privacy invasion.
My yubikey has gone thru the washer. Works fine. Probably don't want to do it regularly.
Nah. It does a per-site cryptographic signing. There's no way to track them cross-site without you doing something like using the same login.
ICQ vs Teams. So very true. I'm probably going to have to get a new work computer with days of reconfig cos so much is not saved properly in our profiles cos Teams just Cannot Cope and is eating 97% of the RAM constantly even when not in a video call.
Image now ALT texted. I thought it was described but re-seeing my boost in timeline the image wasn't described, so can only assume I was having a stupid last night and you get this post instead.
I live to serve.
As they say in the old country: "your mom sounds like a hoot 'n a half!"
I have the best conversations with my mom. I try my best at a translation of the call I just had with her:
