#JohnMastodon is proof that things *CAN* go viral here on Mastodon, but the key is that *YOU* are the algorithm. The reason that the John Mastodon meme showed up on other people's timelines is because so many users boosted the posts.
The lesson here is: please don't just favourite something if you really enjoyed it; BOOST it so that other people can enjoy it, too! This is the only reason why I bother to create as large a social graph as I can on Mastodon—to act as an amplifier. You can, too!❤️😉
@dayatsea Sorry. Let me try again.
"There's a stupid thing going on with the self-appointed Mastodon Police where they're scolding newly arrived artists and writers for promoting their own work.
That's some serious bullshit, and it needs to stop."
Better?
I came across a math puzzle here in the fediverse, and puzzled about it for a while. (Lost the link to the original post; if it's yours let me know.)
Here's the problem:
```
Bob was given 30 distinct natural numbers. He wrote down all the 435 pairwise sums. It appears that among those sums, 230 are divisible by 3. How many of the original 30 numbers are divisible by 3?
```
I was able to find the answer after playing with it for a bit. Then I made this cool visualization. (It's a spoiler, of course.)

I'm delighted by all the goodies and benefits I happened into on mine here at qoto. The starting text block is at 64K, which is huge in comparison to most, for example. The description page at https://qoto.org/about/more will give you a rundown, and I think you'll be pleased and surprised by the list of features.
Despite the recent enormous surge in activity and memberships, the server is still speedy (as is the administration). I've had zero trouble with any unpleasant characters lurking about. The management is pro-active in handling issues quickly. The underlying reason for its existence is as a science and science education instance, so there are many intelligent and well-spoken folks about.
Even though there are now over 25,000 users, the admin is reachable and responsive.
Hope you check us out!

Boost this poll, dammit. I want to be Fediverse famous just once.

In my mini-guide to Mastodon I point out that the interaction numbers you see when you click on someone else's post won't necessarily accurately reflect what's happening.

Here's a great example! First example is what a currently viral toot looks like from "my Mastodon" right now - the second is what it looks like over at its home instance.
New section on character manipulation functions in R Workflow at http://hbiostat.org/rflow/rbasics.html#sec-rbasics-charmanip . I'm seeking more types of useful examples for these #rstats functions: gsub, sub, grep.

I appreciate all of John Mastodon’s visionary efforts, don’t get me wrong. But naming the system after himself like that kind of diminishes the contributions of the many other, already less visible, volunteers who built it.
And isn’t it long past time we also acknowledge the foundational work of Julia Mammoth?
Hi Econ Mastodon. I’m relatively new here but if nerdy economics podcasts are your thing I host one called Trade Talks. Here’s the latest episode (with Steve Redding):
173. Did Britain’s slave trade help drive its industrial revolution?
Deleted my #Twitter account. Kind of mourning this. A lot of memories - met so many wonderful people. Did a lot of good raising awareness about attacks on public #HigherEd. Learned a lot from my #healtheconomics colleagues. Hope to find community here.
