Elsevier appears to be collecting and monetizing our personal data, sometimes without our consent. The data they collect can be used to "extrapolate core working hours, vacation times, and other patterns of a person’s life."

What can we do?

Over 20,000 researchers are refusing to publish, review, or edit for Elsevier. You can also ask them to delete your "non-integral" personal data: elsevier.com/legal/privacy-pol

The result = pretty good!

Has my role as a writer been reduced to fact-checking, performing a Grammarly check, and adding a little flavour to the text?

Seriously questioning what the future of writing looks like at this point.

Also, reflecting on the equity of these tools in higher education. There is a fee involved in using the tools. It's not that high, but it means that students with $$$ are once again at an advantage.

Will HE providers of the future purchase enterprise subscriptions to level the playing field so that all students have access?

So many questions!!!

As a beginning coder using #ChatGPT for help, I can see the draw for beginning writers.

It's also next to impossible it is for me to critically evaluate what it gives me. At times its code doesn't work.

Writing assignments don't generate error messages.

Teaching students to be skeptical of AI outputs has its limits.

Studi2: „8. Januar“
Ich: „Ich bin in den Ferien bis zum 6.“
Lange Gesichter, aber ich kann einfach nicht mehr und im 5. Semester ist man alt genug, sich Zeit einzuteilen

Turns out I either have to leave qoto (which I really like) and switch to a server which is more rigorous in blocking others (WTF) to keep in touch with friends. Or I just leave the fediverse at all and leave it to those feeling morally superior (WTF)
In other words: Good morning!

Is there a way to see which servers have blocked or muted qoto? I realize not being seeing that many posts from people I follow who are on other instances and I’m told that they are not able to see me any longer. It’s also rather strange to be on waiting-lists for people I regularly interacted elsewhere. My main motivation to come over here was to keep in touch with all those fine people I like but left Twitter, and to find a much more friendly space.

As someone who remembers websites regularly stating they are "optimized for Internet Explorer 5.5", I really hate how we’re now moving towards a web that is "optimized for Chromium-based browsers". #OpenWeb #BrowserWars

@tla Ah, fond memories! But I don’t think ChatGPT vs. Galactica would be that much fun; they’re both smart-asses. But running ELIZA against them might be fun: “What makes you think you are a large language model trained by OpenAI?”

One straightforward way of dealing with systems like or in is to directly confront students with an LLM-generated answer and have them critique it.
This is in fact be much better aligned with what we want to teach. Remembering and recalling facts isn’t an important skill anymore, but is essential for a future in which graduates will work side by side with “.”

Der NightJet von Dienstag kündigt schon mal an, dass er fast zwei Stunden später in Berlin ankommen wird. Find ich super! Immerhin fährt er also. Und ich kann gemütlich ausschlafen. Die übliche unvorhergesehene Verspätung kommt ja dann noch dazu
