@birdiefire OK, I subscribed to both of them. I'm a night owl, this will give me plenty of things to watch when my brain is fried from reading and googling what I'm reading.

@birdiefire Thanks - I'll check them out. I love youtube. I watched the lecture by the author of the 1177 B.C. book, it is what made me interested in the subject. And, of course, the collapse of our current complex society is on my mind. If right-wing despots with nuclear weapons don't do us in, we know climate change is going to.

Finished up my Tunisian crochet bookcase blanket. I always have difficulty judging the width when I set up the first rows so I had to make the border extra wide but overall I like it. #crochet #yarn

@birdiefire That's what I'm reading about -- the Bronze Age Collapse. 1177 B.C. is the first one, then I have a couple more on my Amazon wish list, one is a book by an author named Tainter, can't remember the title. What do you recommend?

The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

I mentioned Edward Snowden in another thread. I note that he (according to The Washington Post) was personally granted Russian citizenship by Vladimir Putin.

Under the circumstances there was probably little else Snowden could do.

[This happened way back in September. I've only noticed now.]

I'm reading about the collapse of complex societies and going back and forth between books and google because there is so much I don't know about the historical people in these books. Also, and I imagine this will offend some, I think that actually throwing money at space travel and fantasizing about living on other planets right now is sort of like fiddling while Rome burns. Don't you think so? Oh well, I guess we all have to occupy ourselves in some way while we wait for disaster.

So elon has learned what happens when he tries to bluff. A lot of people called his bluff and are taking their three months of severance pay. I hope they all find jobs in about a month, but first have some time off and rest.

One of the greatest things Twitter brought to the table was the ability to scale up smaller or more obscure information and sources. Someone halfway around the world throws out a message about something eventful happening and shortly after the world is discussing it. I and a lot of others are Looking into and trying to figure out Mastodon. I’m hoping Mastodon can facilitate that function should Twitter no longer be reliable as it appears likely the case.

The British refusing to accept that Brexit is partly responsible for the economic crisis is like Americans refusing to accept guns are responsible for gun crime.

Summary of my personal Mastodon experience after 1 week.

1. No one likes the current owner of Twitter
2. Cat people outnumber the dog people
3. Everybody is remarkably smart about something

That’s it.

@tbruck Stopping fascists is a matter of survival, not a debatable moral obligation. Personally, I think we're doomed, or at least, the world is doomed for quite a few reasons. I'm an old woman, so it's not going to affect me as much as the rise of fascism will hurt younger people who will have to live in the world that is coming. It's not enough to vote. It's important to speak up wherever possible, although it won't change many minds, it may keep more liberal people from disappearing.

@radehi Has it been 30 years? I guess so. I was introduced to computers in the early to mid 80s by a friend who was a computer wizard for the navy. I had a website by the early 90s for my business. I'm glad I was alive at the right time to be involved. It's amazing what computers and the internet have done to change the world. I think I would seriously mourn if the internet disappeared.

@radehi A perfect environment for a super troll like elon musk, right?

@radehi The whole internet makes it easy for people to be their nastiest selves with impunity. It's hard to maintain an environment that is civil and respectful while at the same time allowing people to speak their minds. So far I haven't seen any of that nastiness here, but I've only been on Mastodon for two or three days.

@radehi I'll have imposter syndrome for both of us! I think this is experimental for a lot of us anyway. I never paid a lot of attention to Twitter, but wanted to add my little bit to the many others who walked away from it because of elon musk.
