Superb structural glycobiology from Joel Bloch with Ethan Goddard-Borger & Kaspar Locher who solved the structure of tryptophan C-mannosyltransferase ! congratulations
Everything about this story is just appalling: University administrators, and apparently even student journalists, have apparently decided that material a particular religious group considers “blasphemous” is therefore “harmful.” They cannot have thought through the consequences of applying that idiotic principle consistently. https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2023/01/03/debates-whether-academic-freedom-includes-images-offensive-muslims
Amid a raft of hospital closures, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves cautioned lawmakers against rushing to provide funding for ailing hospitals during a press conference on Jan. 3, 2023, saying that “keeping inefficient systems is not a good answer.”
Another HS polymerase structure, after the one from Rebekka Wild's group, late in 2022.

I know that facts don't matter so much during a moral panic, but I'll just say that I teach a class every year at Stanford that tackles hate speech, violence, terrorism, child exploitation, suicide and other really difficult topics and use a lot of these words with no difficulties.
I do give my students a talk up front about the content of the course and the need to be resilient if you want to make a positive impact in this field, but so far no complaints.

BIG NEWS: Congress is ready to give the City of Jackson $600 million under the federal omnibus package—an enormous sum that would finally make addressing the Jackson water crisis and fixing the city's broken water system a reality.

One of the biggest corruption cases ever came out of a San Diego Union-Tribune reporter noting something fishy about Rep. Duke Cunningham’s sale of a house. DC reporters never would have found it.
For anyone wondering, I'm still unable to access Twitter until I delete this tweet, which is factual journalism that doesn't even break the location rule Twitter enacted a few days ago. The account isn't marked as suspended anymore, but I can't use it or see tweets from people I follow. Using Mastodon exclusively for now and actually really enjoying it.
Please spread the word.

This is apparently the tweet that led to my suspension from Twitter. Right as I was reinstated they announced a new policy that they apparently found me to have retroactively violated

#StructuralBiologists are often experts at purifying recombinant #protein. I did not appreciate the value of that skill in #industry. Know your worth when you bring your knowledge to a company.
Some examples of outsourced proteins:
1) Fee-for-service (FFS) CRO catalog protein = $2500/mg. Later, we purified 20 mg from a 2L bacterial culture w/ standard purification protocol.
2) FFS purifying protein as part of #crystallography project. $8-10K per purification (with methods already established).
