In 1979 Jimmy Carter installed solar panels on the White House roof. In the 80s' Ronald Reagan removed them.
Carter wanted renewables to generate 20% of U.S. energy needs by 2000. When Reagan was elected he scrapped the policy, eliminating tax breaks for renewable technologies in favour of oil and gas. Today the US produces just 7% of its energy from renewables, the majority from hydroelectric schemes.
A massive wasted opportunity which we and future generations will pay for.

Note how in the first story the “car” caused a fatal accident, where in the second story it was the “driver.”

Putting a police department logo on the side of a car appears make it sentient.

Watching Twitter fail into nothingness is like watching and old friend slowly lose their mental capacites. It hurts, this friend had some problems, but they helped spread the word about artists, independent journalists, mom and pop shops... Now they just sit in their recliner in the dark, wondering why their friends don't call anymore.

The most comically sad thing about this whole Twitter two-factor fiasco is they could have just come out and said they are retiring SMS-based auth for security reasons and it would have been a totally fine decision. Instead they tie it to a tiny incremental revenue opportunity and it once again outs them as total morons.

This week could be a pivotal week for the future of the #Internet. The US Supreme Court will be hearing oral arguments in #GonzalezVsGoogle. Will they uphold the liability protections of #Section230 for website operators? Or will they change the definitions?

@mmasnick has a great piece summarizing the issues: “Next Week, The Supreme Court Could Destroy Everything Good About The Internet “

So far #OPNsense works great! I like the „Reporting" page, espescially Unbound DNS.
Also setting up public accessable block lists is painless. I’m using now most of the #NextDNS blocklists locally. Let's see how much is left.

Side note: I read some articles in the OPNSense docs (ex. docs.opnsense.org/manual/monit).
Often these docs include „we have“, „we thought" etc. Somehow makes it more human. 😍

I would recommend at least having a look into OPNSense, set up a VM and play around 🧪

In light of #twitter deciding to remove #2fa from non-Blue users, maybe reposting this is appropriate. Sticking around isn’t going to “save” the #birdsite it’s time to move on.

@john ah, this is helpful. Thanks for it. I watched the whole interview. Helps to hear the context Altman feels LLMs are being generated within.

But also concerning to have just witnessed the (one-week-long) emergence of a serious alignment problem he mentions almost in passing: "what if this things becomes a creature that views us as a threat". That's at 08:49 in the interview.

There needs to be more discussion of the ethical implications around that.

Rant about Fox

Now tell me who is doing more damage to our democracy: Mark Zuckerberg or Rupert Murdoch? And if you’re answer is Zuck, please note how Rupert and his cronies willingly, knowingly, deliberately shoveled dangerous lies onto the airwaves in search of ratings. As they have been accused of doing for decades. FB amplifies, but Fox is the source.
