Tom Scott is spot-on with regard to the possible consequences of AI and its impact on our jobs. We need to prepare an exit before a long queue forms on the way out.

My almost 13 year old daughter had a good idea. We’ve been talking about doing a podcast together - mostly for us to have.
Her idea was reviewing books that are being taken out of school libraries - discussing the content, reviewing the actual literature but also the reasons it was banned and our thoughts there as well.
This is something I think that we will do, soon.

People are not always realizing it, but way too often so-called "security" nowadays works against YOU, the end user... hence I have defined a list of unwelcome "security" practices that have been scaring me away from the #Mac lately #helloSystem #security https://github.com/helloSystem/hello/wiki/Welcome-and-unwelcome-technologies#unwelcome-security
@parkermolloy throws a few much-needed jabs at the parade of professional tech journalists pretending to be "frightened" because an "AI" bullshit generator generated some bullshit:

I find it stupid and sometimes shameful to see FLOSS projects ignoring bug reports (or close without looking closely) or replying with "PRs welcome". The bug reporters don't want to annoy the developers, they want to help and get help if necessary.
I also find it stupid to automatically close an issue after a certain time. This does not make the problem go away.

Meta to test monthly subscription service priced at $11.99

What do you get for a monthly subscription fee to Facebook? Not much: a blue tick, and the knowledge that Facebook has your official ID for ever, which it can sell to other companies and miuse to send you more targeted ads. Meta isn't offering to pay you for this; now they want you to pay to be their product.
If Meta was offering an ad-free version of FB or an untampered feed, that would be an improvement. But as it stands, this is only more — as @doctorow calls it — enshittification. If it's not worth your US$12/15 a month for them to drop the ads, it shows they're making more money than that from feeding you ads and snooping on your online presence.

#ChatGPT written in #Go, instead of #Python, would consume 17 times less energy: the comparative study demonstrates how certain neural network operations are much faster in Go due to the fact that it is a compiled language, converted directly to #Assembly.
What stops #OpenAI from rewriting all the code into Go?

I’ve noticed a lot of instances are using #patreon to collect instance fees and donations. Patreon is shareholder owned. When you make payments through Patreon, 7% of your payment goes to Patreon, which ultimately goes to Patreon shareholders.
That’s not a model that suits the #fediverse. Here’s an alternative: use https://opencollective.com/. It’s a co-op, and it only charges 2%, which ultimately gets used to fund new #coops. Now, that’s a more #decentralised, fediverse-style model, isn’t it!
