Émilie du Châtelet, who hypothesized conservation of energy, established kinetic energy as distinct from momentum and proportional to (speed)², and combined work by Newton and Leibniz with her own original ideas in "Institutions de Physique," was born #OTD in 1706.

Du Châtelet is an important figure in the development of classical physics, but she is not nearly as well known as many of her male contemporaries.

@MsHouseMD Thank you! These ancient traditions are absolutely fascinating to me.

A friend recently brought to my attention that Merriam-Webster defines "yule" only as synonymous with Christmas. Further down the page the etymology and history are briefly given but I'd think the definition could be expanded!

@Neekerbreeker It definitely could. And I do understand the charm, history of cultures, tradition origins and custom formations can be utterly enthralling 😊

I took this shot of Hollow Rock on Grand Portage and Lake Superior a decade ago.

Despite this spot being only about 45 minutes of my house, I seldom get there. Every year, I think that I should go photograph it in December when the sun comes through the hole, but then I end up doing other locations for the good sunrises.

The water was low a decade ago! You can't get this close now that water levels are near normal.

I logged on here yesterday for the first time in two weeks - thanks so much to everyone who has commented on my photos and sent messages. I hugely appreciate it, and wish I have had more time to engage.

Sorry for the lack of response - things are busy, as I have just moved house, and I'm running photography workshops and working on commissions.

I hope you are all enjoying the wintry weather if you have it! Long may it last
