The ABCs of #climate change by the journalist who put the Sixth Extinction on the map: "Climate change isn’t a problem that can be solved by summoning the “will.” It isn’t a problem that can be “fixed” or “conquered,” though these words are often used. It isn’t going to have a happy ending, or a win-win ending, or, on a human timescale, any ending at all. Whatever we might want to believe about our future, there are limits, and we are up against them." @elizkolbert newyorker.com/magazine/2022/11

In reality, we're not mere passengers on the blue marble but crew members who can determine the future of Earth.

Hello Mastodon! This is an #introduction. I’m a writer (book: Spare Parts, which is a history of transplant surgery from the sixteenth century to the present day (yes, they did transplants back then!) Published by Penguin in the UK and Australia, and St Martin’s in North America. Before this, I was a film maker. Actually, I still am, working mostly with museums, universities and healthcare institutions. I’m so excited to learn about and connect with you all!

It’s good to see engagement and use growing here. It would be healthy to have a social platform free of the billionaire oligopoly and the corporate ad folks, don’t you think?

Your #school #culture is made up of every single interaction that happens (or doesn't happen) between people throughout the day.

Your school #climate is made up of how people feel about those interactions (or lack of them).

Your words have Weight, they can bring people down.
Your words have Height, they can lift people up.
Most importantly:
Your words have Length, they last a lifetime!

Be #kind #thoughtful #intentional and #present.

@edutooters One idea that I’ve recommended to our #teachers who stress about weekends being over too quickly is to stop #planning Monday through Friday and instead make a small shift to planning Tuesdays through Mondays instead.

Sundays are a little less stressful when you're already prepped for Monday.

If you're ever frustrated with an experiment, consider the example of the Queensland Pitch Drop Experiment begun in 1927, the longest running experiment... and I want to really make this land for you... STILL HAS NOT technically yielded a single direct observation as of 2022.

From the article intro: “Alice Gorman is a space archaeologist working on space junk in Earth orbit, deep space probes, and planetary landing sites. She explores what we can learn from these items and places as material objects, and also their heritage significance – what they actually mean for people and communities on Earth.”

Evolution doesn’t look how it’s depicted in pop culture. We often picture the famous “March of Progress” illustration where a series of apes stand in line leading to a modern human.

But evolution is not linear. It branches and branches. Divides in some places and recombines in others. #science

I don’t understand why people think Mastodon is difficult. It seems pretty straightforward, and the separate servers are no biggie. I’m enjoying this fresh start here, like moving to a new apartment!
