Broad-billed Hummingbird

Brilliantly-colored hummingbird with dark tail and mostly red bill. Primarily a Mexican species, but occurs locally in the southwestern U.S. Can appear all dark at a distance, but in the right light, look for beautiful iridescent blues and greens on male's body. Females are less colorful than males, dusky grayish below with prominent white stripe behind the eye. Compare especially with female White-eared Hummingbird, which is more spotted below and has a broader white eyestripe and darker cheek. Occurs in scrubby riparian woodland, canyons, and thorn forest. Often visits hummingbird feeders.

My husband took this photo in 2020, it shows Comet Neowise over the Longstone at Mottistone on the #IsleofWight.
We have wonderful dark skies here which really helped. We made the walk up to the neolithic monument late at night which was really magical. I was given a torch and duly light painted the Longstone with it whilst my husband snapped away.
We had our teenage son with us and once we had the shot we sat down and stargazed. #StandingStoneSunday

Morning.

In Katowice for the Silesian Science Festival & some #JWST talks.

And in the hotel bar with us last night, the cast & crew of the Original Enigma Voices tour, who we talked to.

Yes, *that* Enigma 😱

You can’t make this stuff up. One for #SpaceRocks, perhaps? 🙂

I could stare at these images all day and they still wouldn’t compute somehow. Great work by @markmccaughrean to bring them a little more down to Earth. #jwst #spacerocks 🖖🤘#katowice

A foggy Blade Runner evening in Katowice, looking out from the International Conference Centre. Sometimes it can be good to have a smeary lens 🤪

Today’s talk on #JWST done – I’ll have 33% more time for the same talk tomorrow, so will be able to speak more slowly & spare the nerves of the simultaneous translator a little 😱

👋 Hello from #Zurich!

I'm a researcher working at the intersection of #neurosciene and #ai. Before joining Google's #connectomics team earlier this year, I did my PhD advised by @jakhmack on simulation-based Inference (#sbi).

Excited to see Mastodon gaining momentum!

For many many years I've reviewed and recommended kids' books about space. After a couple-year hiatus, I'm finally back at it! I'll use this thread to review and recommend books to give to kids of all ages, or to libraries or schools.

I have a biiiiiiiiig pile to sort through. First up: my recommendations for kids ages 0-3:
