#theBeeAt3

Basic bee facts every day at 3pm.

No. 8.

Only about 10% of bee species are social. The other 90% are solitary bees. They build individual nests, don’t have a queen and don’t make honey.

👋

I am a neuroscientist interested in the circuit dynamics of adaptive but reliable visually guided behavior.

In our group at the U Bonn, we study

- the stabilization of the neural code in visual perception, learning, and memory

- the pathway-specific processing of sensory and self-motion signals

We emphasize ethologically relevant behavior, longitudinal synapse- and circuit-level optophysiology, and miniaturized and bench-top two-photon microscopy.

Neuro-evo conference at HHMI Janelia on May 15-18, 2023. Join us for the third edition!

Application deadline: Jan 27 (11:59 p.m. EST) 2023.

Apply here: janelia.org/you-janelia/confer

"Historically, with the study of the most convenient animal models —from the giant axon of the squid and the lobster's stomatogastric circuits to Aplysia's synapses and C. elegans' circuits — neuroscientists revealed some of the operating principles of the nervous system, which were then found to apply broadly across phyla. The third instalment of this meeting will once again bring together neuroscientists working on a broad diversity of animal models in an effort to compare circuits across phyla as a means to crack their function."

Hi! 👋
It's time for an #introduction here on #neuroscience mastodon.
I'm Hannah Haberkern and I study flies to learn more about how animals navigate. I'm especially interested in visual orientation and the role of plasticity in #navigation. Currently I'm a postdoc at HHMI Janelia in Vivek Jayaraman's lab.

I'll take this new start as an opportunity to start sharing a bit more #pigeon and #quilting content. Here's me with a semi-recent quilt finish, a quilt that's in progress, and my Boab.

My favourite grasshopper photo moment: moulting sequence.

An unusual observation in the wild: a pale-looking large grasshopper nymph, immobile, that started moulting with undulating, rhythmic motions. The head cuticle slowly detached as the new body propelled forward–giving it the appearance of having two heads. Half way through, a yellowjacket wasp attacked!

The wasp munched on the soft, unexpanded wings while the grasshopper helplessly continued its slow moulting procedure into its adult form. Left alive but not unscathed.

We are hunting for experimental reports of protein diffusion coefficients in dendrites to be used in our models. We have found ~20, but more would be better. If you have any leads let me know.

Applying to grad school? Want to join my lab? I'm accepting students through Psychology (as.nyu.edu/psychology/graduate) or Data Science (cds.nyu.edu/phd-admissions-req)! For more info and possible project areas, see below or check out my website 👉 lindsay-lab.github.io

I am a Max Planck Research Group Leader at the #MPI for Biological Intelligence. My lab explores fundamental questions in developmental #neurobiology related to the generation of cell-type diversity. We combine #scRNAseq with lineage barcoding tools and genetic perturbation to explore principles that orchestrate the establishment of neuronal identities.

Bringing #TinyFish content to Mastodon. I'm a marine scientist who studies the biodiversity and functioning of reefs. My lab at UT Austin works mostly on tiny, bottom-dwelling fishes – these little guys are gorgeous but few of them grow larger than a couple of inches... 🤏 🐠 #Ecology #Biodiversity #TeamFish #Fish

Would really appreciate the boost on this platform. We're hiring in my department at York Univ., Toronto

Hi all!
I am an engineer and software developer focused on tools for research, especially for extracellular . Core developer of @spikeinterface.

Currently working with the Allen Institute of Neural Dynamics to build efficient and automated pipelines for large-scale ephys analysis. Also working part-time with CatlystNeuro, helping labs to adopt open-source and standard solutions for analysis and data storage.
I'm also interested in biophysical , , and approaches to probe neural activity.

I just joined Mastodon.

I’m a professional artist and a photographer, living and working in St Albert, Alberta, Canada.
When painting I primarily work in oil and paint realism. When I’m not in front of the easel you can find me out looking for wildlife to photograph. #polarbears #wildlife #artist #photography

Meet the punk rocker of the tit family, the crested tit.

In the UK, these charming but feisty characters are only found in the Scottish Highlands.

This individual made my day when it posed in a near perfect manner, looking right down my lens.

This was from a day out, almost a decade ago, with my good friend Neil McIntyre.

. I'm a theoretical neuroscientist at U Mainz Medical Center and co-affiliated with U Bonn Medical center. Primary focus on cortical circuits, their network activity, synaptic plasticity and protein dynamics in dendrites. Broadly interested how circuits learn e.g. neuro/AI interface and want to understand how neural networks compute, both algorithmically and intracellularly. Occational posts about societal and academic issues.

These are native to the southern hemisphere but have somehow made their way to Northern Ireland.
