Attention: Another QOTO Update/Restart

This is a big one so everyone pay attention.

I recently just got done adding in several new features to the QOTO codebase, it will be going live on the server within the hour. It brings with it lots of new features you wont find in Mastodon, that also means a bit of risk, so lets hope this update goes smoothly.

Once the new version is up please feel free to share what you love or hate, we can always tweak this stuff. The following are some of the new features:

* Bookmarking toots and retrieving.

* Quoting toots

* Domain subscription (this one is my favorite) where you can follow a specific instance (not a user) and basically create a local timeline at QOTO reflecting the remote instances timeline.

* Account subscription. This is a bit like a follow but not a follow. It is where you follow a persons public toots only but dont actually follow them. This is handy if a user posts some public toots but also has their followers locked for approval. You can still follow them without their approval or them even knowing you follow.

* a more prominent link to our QOTO announcements and the #QotoJournal / #QOTO hashtags.

* Several additional theme alternatives to try

Did you know that qoto.org is already listed on https://keybase.io and you can verify your identity with keybase with just a few simple steps?

Just go to your keybase profile and click the link to prove a new identity. Qoto.org will already show up in the list of servers, you dont need to do anything special.

Once you identify your keybase profile will show that your mastodon account is verified and your local mastodon profile will even show a nice little check mark to prove your identity like in the attached screen shot!

Not an important announcement but we have one more fix we did on #QOTO worth mentioning.

We now have both the https and http for the www.qoto.org subdomain redirecting to the proper URL (before you would just get a 404).

This wont effect our regular users who know our url already but it seems google was linking to the www sub-domain. So this should improve our visibility and increase the number of new users we get. Either way its a nice convince factor for people manually typing in the url.

We have just went through and upgraded all of the peripheral #QOTO services to their latest versions. Many new features and some nice performance improvements in a few places. the Discourse forum is loading much quicker for example.

One small reminder over the most recent upgrade. Because of changes in 3.0.0 our search index had to be recreated. Because we have one of the largest historical collection of toots in the fediverse going back several years this means it will take quite a while to re-index. It may be a day or two until full text search is fully working again but it will slowly come back online. Thanks for the patience.

QOTO's varient of Mastodon is now deployed, version 3.0.1 is now active with all sorts of new features.

Aside from a few new features in your profile settings one really nice new feature is that all moderator actions with regards to suspending or silencing an instance is automatically reported on our about/more page. This means you are always promised to see a live up to date report of any servers we decide to block or silence. Help keep us honest.

While we wait for the system administrator to start flipping the bits and begin the upgrade I wanted to update everyone on what this new QOTO update will be bringing us.

* Fixes character limit when using mobile apps. On compliant mobile apps it should now be possible to make full size posts of 65,535 characters just as you always could in the web interface.

* Local-only / non-federated toots will now be possible. This lets you make toots that show up int he Local feed but not in the Federated feed.

* The link to the source code on our about page will now correctly post to the QOTO source code

* Plus all the great features QOTO is already known for like in-line math latext is still available.

* And of course we also pull in all the great features added in the core Mastodon 3.0.1 releases such as trending hashtags, better media support, better user migration capabilities, and better management over live-refreshing fast-moving feeds.

The #QOTO #funkwhale instance experienced a some downtime lately, not sure for how long. It has recently been fixed and the service should be back up and running.

All services except for the main qoto mastodon instance will expiernce some brief downtime in about an hour as i upgrade the servers.

Shouldnt be more than 5 minutes but there will likely be a DNS update that may take a bit longer to refresh for some people locally.

Important Announcement

Today we are beginning a nomination for #QOTOs next moderator 🎉

Basically it works like this, any one of you can nominate someone from QOTO. The only restriction is the person you nominate must be active for at least the last month. You can even nominate yourself, but it usually looks better if you can get one or more people to nominate you, symbolically speaking.

The moderators will then select the finalists which if there is more than one person then the community can vote on them.

So for the next 2 weeks I will be taking nominations for the moderator position, and they can discuss their views as a potential moderator. Then we can pick who lines u with QOTO Ideals,

For those of you who missed the announcement from the @freemo account just wanted to reiterate it here.

In honor of our new Indian friends we added two new emoji to the server.

Also if anyone has any emoji they want added, even if its just for personal use (like a monogram of your name or a picture of your own face, anything) we can add it. Just send a 50kb or less PNG image to @freemo and it can be added.

All my new Indian friends who found their way here this week (and others).

Dont forget to do two things to help you get some followers:

1) write a post about yourself, include as many hashtags as you ca think of along with the #introductions tag and a paragraph or two. I will reboost these

2) Go into your profile settings and opt-in to the proile directory. This ensures people can find you. It also helps if you add the same tags from your introduction post to your description in your profile. These tags help index you in the profile directory

3) Stay active and post interesting stuff (and some stuff relevant to STEM). If you do then on friday I will share your account in Follow Friday and help get you more followers as well.
