We’re busy getting the online news publications of the Bylines Network up on Mastodon.

Bear with us as we work it out! Each Bylines is its own team - and we’re all in group chats learning the system together!

Healthcare is so important for us all.

This Saturday, show you care.

There was no treatment for this at the time, so Pulaski’s parents would have been able to decide if he should be raised male or female. As a woman, he would have a hard time marrying and having children, but as a man, he could have an outstanding military career, and no one would ever know.

At least until 2019.

More about Pulaski in my post here:

During #WW1, Marie Curie created a vehicle that contained a hospital bed, generator, X-ray machine & photographic darkroom equipment. These “petite Curies" (below) could be driven right up to the Front. Curie trained 150 women as radiology technicians.

You can learn more about this and other medical advances during WW1 in my latest book #TheFacemaker.

We also have a new paper out this week: nature.com/articles/s41598-022 l

This report describes the start of a #DrugDiscovery programme - setting up assays, screening, crystallography. A lot of work goes into this #HitDiscovery phase and we feel it is often underreported, so great that Olivier, Maggie and team pulled this paper together.

Without this work, projects don’t get off the ground, so kudos to our #AssayDevelopment and #StructuralBiology colleagues!

Hello, #Mastodon!

This whalebone walking stick with skull pommel once belonged to Charles Darwin. Yep, you read that right!. I bet you didn't know Darwin was such a badass. It's now on display at the Wellcome Collection in London, and I think you'll agree it's pretty amazing.

Happy #Monday!

Not all heroes wear capes. Some are Mastodon #sysadmin spending extra time, during the week-end, doing their best to keep servers up and running while the #twittermigration is happening. #Respect that. #ThankYou

I'm having surgery for #breastcancer on Saturday.

As a medical historian, I've been thinking a lot about those who've come before me, like Lucy Thurston, who had her breast removed without anesthetic in 1855.

"“[E]very glimpse I happened to have, was the doctor’s right hand completely covered with blood, up to the very wrist…It was nearly an hour and a half that I was beneath his hand.”

Thurston survived, but many did not. I feel grateful to these women.

Okay let’s give this thing a go.

In my column on Friday, I highlighted the shocking fact that Britons now have the worst access to healthcare in Europe, and this is causing worsening health

*1 in 6* UK adults needed medical examination or treatment in the last year but were unable to access it (due mainly to waiting lists), higher than in all 35 other European countries

More random #security thoughts:

1. Mastodon is pretty chill but expect a surge of troll activity with all the attention. Nothing is totally immune to the challenges associated with attention/scale.
2. Try to be open to new followers but check them out - Who do they follow? Who follows them?
3. Block quickly at any hint of malicious behavior/hate/trolling. Don't engage. Keep the vibe positive.
4. If you see patterns of abuse share that information with your followers.

Whilst I'm on #introductions, I'm also an author. Never thought I'd say that, but here we are.

I wrote "Managing Your Mental Health During Your PhD:A Survival Guide" because I struggled during my own PhD. I felt worthless and experienced a range of emotions, feeling suicidal at times, and wanting to quit. So I decided I wanted to create a resource for others that might be struggling.
