Whatsapp Data Breach - 500M Affected

“WhatsApp data breach sees nearly 500 million user records up for sale… The post, which multiple sources have confirmed is likely to be true, claims to be selling an up-to-date, 2022 database of 487 million mobile numbers used on WhatsApp, which contains data from 84 countries.

This means that almost one-quarter of all WhatsApp's estimated two billion monthly active users are possible at risk.” techradar.com/news/whatsapp-da

Cricut cutting machines, ubiquitous in schools, libraries and makerspaces, can be used to make embossed or stenciled tactile graphics. A Braille embosser costs at least $1500 — Cricuts cost a fifth of that or less. Today I learned that I can handle the hardware and make great stencils: all that holds a Blind maker back is a set of unlabeled controls in the software. Does anyone know somebody at Cricut I could talk to about making the interface more accessible? Boosters beloved on this one!

Who here is both an experienced moderator (which means you are plugged into networks of moderators) & knows how to put a co-op together & make it work? @schock proposed a moderator co-op as a means of keeping norms from breaking as Mastodon population grows with an influx of newcomers. Paying moderators means income is needed. I'm paying a couple bucks a month to my instance's Patreon. (A public goods problem: will enough ppl contribute if it is voluntary?) #onlinecommunities #mastodon

So, a suggestion for birdsite expatriates who were/are heavy into USA political topics. It might be a good plan to tag your posts #USPol, NOT just #politics. Unless I've missed something, we're still in the minority here, and most of us are on non-USA-based servers. Some folks want their filters to work without dropping other discussions of interest. They might be too polite to tell you. Or not. 😬 🤔 🙃

Having run my own test mastodon server, I can tell you that boosting is REALLY important. That's how posts propagate between servers that are not federated together.

I may get a bit technical, and it can be hard to describe but it's something like this:

Let's say that you have 2 servers, A and B that are not connected. They have their own federated timelines that is vastly different.

let's assume they have their users @a@A and @b@B that are mutuals. If user @a@A sees something interesting on theirs federated timeline and boosts it, user @b@B will see that on their own home page. But more importantly server B will now know about and download that post, and everyone else on B server will be able to see that post on their own federated timeline!

And that's why you boost, guys! It helps posts to spread.

I do like it here on Mastodon, but the huge influx of people from Twitter means there are far fewer image descriptions than from even a couple of weeks ago. I’d love to tell every one of them about this, but quite frankly there are so many I don’t have the patience. I’d dearly love it if apps could block posts unless an image description was added to every photo, but I suppose that’s too much to hope for. I’m feeling really excluded from so many conversations. It’s getting as bad as Twitter.

#FediPoll: because of the recent influx of new folks, I‘d like to repeat the "where are you located?" question and see if thing’s have changed. So: where are you?

In the first reply to this I will make another poll specifically asking for US-Americans, don’t worry 😉

Boost this if you like!

@mguhlin as a computer science teacher I have benefited from online professional communities but wished that they were not on platforms I rail against as being detrimental to our students and society.

I am willing to donate my money and, more importantly, my time to create a new space free of that stain. I hope that others well join me and share in the administrative and financial burden.

My investment is driven from the same place my teaching originates, hope for a better future for all.

A question for instance admins from a skeptical educator who refuses to leave Twitter because she doesn’t understand why. So I thought I would ask on her behalf, then share the responses with her: “I really
want your opinion on this
platform. Since someone has
to pay for the "server", I am
wondering what the host gets
back.”

What do you say, admins?

@wfryer Yes, Toot! lets you add people to lists. When on their profile there is a "more" option. Tap that and one option you have is to add them to a list. 😃
