For those of us still wondering whether Merrick Garland will hold Trump and his key enablers accountable in the wake of the Stuart Rhodes' seditious conspiracy verdict: "The department will work tirelessly to hold accountable those responsible for crimes related to the attack on our democracy on Jan. 6th." May it be soon.

"Nostalgia is tricky. We believe we want certain objects, people, or places we no longer have, but we don’t want the things. We want what those things connected us to." -- @antiheroine

Oath Keepers' founder Elmer Stuart Rhodes has been found guilty of seditious conspiracy. That's a start: What about the higher-ups--including the highest higher-up--who helped incite the day's events?

I used to teach people that t***ter didn’t get interesting until you followed at least 50 people. Had to remind myself about that here because it is still true.

This week I have four days with after school meetings. Next week only one day with an after school meting (so far.) Teaching is 37 weeks of telling myself that next week will be less busy.

The parents of preschool students often express concern that their children should be learning instead of napping. But science suggests that critical learning occurs DURING nap-time as young children consolidate learning and memories within the brain. Embrace the nap! #edutoot #edutooter #parenting

I updated my YouTube playlist of past keynotes, workshops & presentations I've shared: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcC

I added about 20 recorded webinars from the past 3 years focusing on remote learning, technology integration, Google Tools, etc. #edtech #MediaLit #NCed

Still thinking about what it means to move your “public square,” and what happens when you realize that the public square wasn’t really public after all.

I pet Minnie. She is a 4 year old Chihuahua mix. She is from Louisiana and was adopted through Bluetails Pet Rescue. Her mom was used as a lizard catching dog! Now Minnie lives in Iowa. She doesn’t like the cold that much, so she wears a sweater.

Well wouldn't that be cool if a decentralized network of locally moderated servers powered by open source code effectively replaced a mega-billionaire-controlled behemoth of a platform?

Translating for educational professionals is vitally important. However, IMO there needs to be some form of QA to check that the translators have actually understood what the studies/findings are telling us. This also applies to pop culture edu books.

I pet Baby. She is a 5 year old Toy Australian Shepherd. Baby’s collar was made by her caregiver. Baby is thankful for her walks and being able to play with Minnie, the other dog in her house. Each person Baby meets, she greets them with a smile.

@cathitza @breadandcircuses Yes, definitely suggest reading the "About" page on whatever Mastadon instance/server you are using as each has its own rules. For example, here is the one for Qoto.org: qoto.org/about/more

Increase the participation ratio while doing regular checks for understanding.
I like using quick multiple choice checks with a show of fingers for the answer. Gives me an overview, and every pupil takes part while not being nervous of speaking out.

@brndnpink @edutooters 1) Tell them how you think about whatever the direct instruction piece is ("If I were writing an introduction for this, I would think first about ... because ....)
2) Think-pair-share at appropriate points to compare what each student pulled from the material and make sure everyone is on track
3) Drain dump into notes every 5-10 min (as appropriate)
4) Make sure that there is a discussion about why what the direct instruction is about is relevant to student lives

@brndnpink @edutooters Don't lecture too much. Break up lecture portions with activities/etc.

And when you do have a lecture portion:

- use slides to accompany a verbal lecture. This is important for accessibility.

- make sure those slides are highly visual and well designed. No SmartArt, Design Ideas, or walls of text that are just read to students 🙏.

- do more than just share fact after fact after fact.... Add stories, metaphors, humor, etc.

A Pinned Thread on Threading and Pinning

While different, threading in Mastodon is actually pretty good. People are familiar with Twitter threads that link one post to the next in chronological order. You can do this on Mastodon too, but it’s a little less polished.

@brndnpink @edutooters Avoid lecture longer than 10 minutes w/out having students discuss questions/insights in partners/small groups or apply new learning. Think of it as finding ways to move what you've just discussed with them into long term memory.
