Time for a new work adventure to begin.

Thrilled to join UND in the College of Education!

Kids can detect what you really think of them. What is says about them that their school has a "discipline center" not a library. What that says about what the adults in their life expect from them. What the education system has to offer for them.

They see it all. Adapt to meet your expectations.

Build a discipline center have discipline problems. Dutifully the children will not want it to go to waste.

And they will remember "libraries aren't for kids like us." for the rest of their lives.

Hey! What's the big deal that there's only 2 companies in the world where we get all our information from?

It's fine. I'm sure they're both on the up and up.

One of the most popular books we send is the current edition of "The World Almanac and Book of Facts". Why is this book so popular? Because the vast majority of prisoners in the U.S. aren't allowed access to the web. This means they can't turn to online resources like Wikipedia to answer their questions about the world.

I have a horrible feeling that a lot of people look at forest fires, floods, record heatwaves, etc., and think, "This is how it's going to be from now on."

It's not. We're still pumping CO2 into the atmosphere, where it's accumulating.

The future is going to be much, much worse. Unless we take drastic action now.

Pedagogical tool thought!

As the new school year is just around the corner I am reflecting on things I did differently last year that were helpful to student learning.

One such thing (and I not one to promote tech tools) has been the use of screenpal.com
I used it expensively to move away from longer video overviews (5-10mins) of tasks and assignments, to embedding short (30 second to 2 minute) videos inside docs that link explanations and clarifications more directly to task components. Was also easy to add these to docs when students asked clarifying questions that I thought the entire class would benefit from.
I am sure there are other similar tools, but this was particularly helpful in providing multiple modalities for students to unpack tasks, and probably reduced the number of clarifying questions I got, so we had more instructional time!

While the earth bakes...

A coalition of conservative groups has assembled a plan to systematically target most of the federal government’s work on climate and clean energy.

Dear journalists:

By remaining on Elon Musk's platform you are -- knowingly or not -- directly supporting your enemy. He is systematically turning his platform into a showcase for people and entities that see democracy as an impediment to achieving what can accurately be understood as fascist goals.

Wrecking democracy means destroying freedom of expression -- the basis of what you do.

For your own sake, and for your honor, please leave.

It is striking to me how some people (too many) think that there is something egregious enough that Trump will do to turn off his ardent supporters. There is no such point.

-He stole money intended for children with cancer.
-He had sex with and paid hush money to a woman while his wife was pregnant.
-There was that whole NBC Access Hollywood tape where he was grabbing women by the p***sy
-He has stolen classified documents and lied to investigators and his own lawyers about it
-He refuses to accept the results of a lawful election
-He tried to start an insurrection.

If you were not moved by any of these actions what do people think will move them?

For pennies a day, you can save a South African child from bankruptcy. Act now, before it’s too late.

DeSantis and Florida republicans have wiped hundreds of thousands of vote by mail registrations from the system—mostly democrats

That means people will not be getting the ballots they requested for the upcoming election if they don’t find if it’s them and re-register

When there are no consequences for fascists?

They keep taking rights until they win.

How School Board Meetings Became Flashpoints for Anger and Chaos Across the Country
==

In the first wide-ranging analysis of school board unrest, ProPublica found nearly 60 incidents that led to arrests or criminal charges. Almost all were in suburban districts, and nearly every participant was white.

Pay $84/year for a chance to win thousands of dollars. This business model sounds familiar but I can’t quite put my finger on it? 🤔
