@pfpoitras Wow nice! My main interest is GPU computing and I have seen many papers that suggest that the next thing is FPGA for parallel computing. However, I never really looked into it because of lack of time.

I will keep reading more about what you post here :)

@pfpoitras Hey, nice to meet you and welcome!

For what fields/applications do you accelerate computation?

Hello!

After a few days figuring out Mastodon with the help of the folks at QOTO, I will formally introduce myself in order to pin this in my profile :)

My name is Abde and I am a computer scientist. My main domain is and . I am currently a PhD student at the Université Libre de Bruxelles () and working on porting numerical solvers for simulations on the GPU using . You may find my first paper here: etna.math.kent.edu/vol.55.2022

Other research interests are

I also work as a developer. My current professional interests are . We also contribute in several projects. Most of my work is done in , so feel free to ask any questions!

As a hobby I do some and also . I will share some snippets of what I do here, but for now I am focusing in crafting my art by producing in .

Please enjoy! I am not the most active but I am looking to build my Mastodon network, so feel free to follow and I will follow back :)

@arinbasu I know what you mean :)

The problem is to explain this to people that are used to centralized services and a global authority. People cannot join this because mastodon.social is overwhelmed, for example; thinking that it is the central server.

There is an education issue to solve there.

Every Mastodon explanation is like "It's very simple, your account is part of a kerflunk, and each kerflunk can talk to each other as part of a bumblurt. At the moment everyone you flurgle can see your bloops but only people IN your kerflunk can quark your nerps. Kinda like email."

Ok, #TwitterMigration folks, I see a lot of people asking, "How do I find people on other servers on #Mastodon or the #fediverse.

Well, here's my #Feditip of how I went from 1 person alone on robot.rodeo to having almost 2,000 interesting people to follow in about 8 months...

3. Follow absolutely anyone who gets boosted into your timeline because they said something that interests you.

4. Go check the bio and profile of people you follow. Follow the author on any interested boost. Click the hashtags in their bio. Follow interesting people there as well.

That's all I've done, and I've found almost 2,000 interesting people since April.

BUT, you can do something I couldn't...

1. Go to joinmastodon.com and look for servers with topics that interest you, or that have a lot of users. Go to those servers home pages and then follow the admin. That admin will likely boost interesting posts on that server, and as you follow people, your social graph will naturally expand into that server.

2. Go to search.twitter.com and run a search for "Mastodon." You'll find lots and lots of people posting links to their Mastodon profile. Follow anyone that interests you.

I am really liking this social network. However, I can understand why it can be difficult to get into. I did find it quite difficult even while I am still tech-savvy and a computer science myself.

I cannot see the regular elon-verse grasp the minimal knowledge about how this social network works. I see a lot of people giving the analogy of "it works just like e-mail, you have servers, etc".

In this era, there are people that think that Gmail(or hotmail) is the only provider of e-mail of the whole world. I already herd "let me gmail this to you".

It shouldn't be a bad thing that mastodon has mastodon.social and that beginners think that instance is the main one. People will at least start using it and learn the true values of Mastodon in the way.

@gooseus Alright, I had the definition of computational complexity in my mind when you mentioned it hehe, but it's still very interesting!

Indeed it can be related to computational complexity, moreover I can see that fitting more in dynamic systems actually. There are many theories that try to model societies, but I am not (at all) an expert on that. The logistic equation is a basic example of population evolution in a complex system with multiple communities!

My thesis is more about numerical approximations of partial differential equations that can represent a model of a physical phenomenon... mostly applied to fluid simulations, for example. The algorithm behind it is the finite element method, where the continuous differential equation is discretized in order to compute it on computers (basically). I actually ported it to the GPUs in order to accelerate it, you may check the paper here: etna.math.kent.edu/volumes/202

I started a new job as a Numerical Simulations Engineer for Virtual Reality at altheria.com recently, you may say that it's quite badass and a really good opportunity to grow.

It is indeed, but the best part is that they let me contribute in open-source projects 🥰 as my colleagues say "if you take, you also should give".

We are currently contributing in a convex decomposition library that seems to be pretty state-of-the-art, take a look:

HOLA! We are looking for a Mastodon developer, preferably #indieweb aware (but not essential), to help evolve a new fork (already mounted) with a few tweaks for a very big community from the birdsite.

It's a nonprofit project, but it will soon have real resources after launch from several interested people and groups.

It's a very limited, single mission, paid gig (but not a big one… yet). We need to be up and running PDQ.

Welcome to the Fediverse. It's nice here!

Remember to report horrible things, your admins and mods can and will deal with it.

Don't try to "grow your brand" here, the Fedi doesn't really work like that. Virality doesn't really happen. It's nice!

Connect with people. Make new friendships. Just be, in a place that respects you as a human.

:mastodon: #MastoTips The best way to avoid seeing unwanted content on #Mastodon is to set up one or more #filters for the words or phrases you don't want to see.

Filters are becoming even more powerful in the upcoming v4 of Mastodon but you can get started now. Here's how:

@jerryorr Welcome!

I really like this idea of having local communities that interact with each other instead of a big agglomerate!

@elkannixed I am also looking for an open computer. For now, I have a Thinkpad t440p, which is the last laptop from Lenovo where you can replace any piece (even the CPU can be removed, it is not soldered to the motherboard).

I don't know if there are any modern laptops that are upgradeable, but if I find anything I'll let you know.

@gooseus Welcome to the Fediverse and , there I followed you!

Please share with us anything about complexity and computer science, which I am a big fan of :)

For what I am seeing, it can be quite complicated to get used to (I started some days ago) but I already feel very confortable using Mastodon compared to the .
