21 December 1944 | A Hungarian Jewish girl, Angela Orosz Richt, was born in Auschwitz II-Birkenau.

Her mother was deported from Hungary when she was 3-month pregnant. She risked her life in the camp to keep the pregnancy secret.

Angela was liberated on 27 January 1945.

Today she lives in Canada & turns 78.

An #introduction ! I am a relatively new assistant professor at Brown University studying #climate, #water, #carbon, #lithium, and #geochemistry. My small but growing research group works on reconstructing past climate using terrestrial archives (soils, caves, lakes), as well as studying modern #rivers and catchments. I am Filipino American also a new dad, avid skier, and former rugby player. Anticipate that this account will have lots of field photos and sharing of science papers!

This is one of the hardest & most important warnings for us all.

Perpetrators were people who accepted and followed an ideology that made them believe that they are better than others and that rationalized and promoted hatred & evil. It became their everyday live.

They were not monsters. They were people who did horrible and monstrous things on the behalf of this ideology. And this is the scary part of the story.

Henrietta Lacks was a poor, Black, young mother diagnosed w cervical cancer in 1951. When her cells were collected w/o consent, scientists saw they multiplied remarkably fast.

“HeLa” cells changed #science. They’re used globally to study viruses, drugs, hormones, genes, diseases & develop vaccines. Lacks passed away at 31 w no recognition.

40 years ago, giant entertainment companies embarked on a slow-moving act of arson. The fuel for this arson was #copyright #TermExtension (making copyrights last longer), including *retrospective* copyright term extensions that took works out of the #PublicDomain and put them back into copyright for decades. Vast swathes of culture became off-limits, pseudo-property with absentee landlords, with much of it crumbling into dust.
