Deep breath..... Going all in with a full intro because I've seen the cool kids do it.

I'm a doctor of wine. With a floppy hat to prove it.

Laboratory nomad for over 12 years bouncing around the globe for #TB, outbreaks or general labrat stuff.

When not in a lab, I'm travelling. Probably hiking or hitching somewhere or drinking tea; maybe gin.

Otherwise I'm stitching swears or lampshades or something.

19 December 1941 | A Hungarian Jewish girl, Marta Weisz, was born in Sárköz. During the war, she lived in Szatmárnémeti.

On 31 May 1944, she was murdered in a gas chamber of Auschwitz II-Birkenau.

Marta was the daughter of Bandi (fate unknown) and Klari. She had an elder brother Robert. Klari & the children were most probably murdered in a gas chamber together.

There are accounts from the first settlers to Turtle Island that the forests were so abundant with food, and that the #indigenous folks they encountered seemed to eat along their pathways while traveling easily. This wasn't an accident. The forests were cultivated food forests, a great technological advance that was then mostly decimated, chopped down, and made into monocrops of things like wheat and corn. #permaculture and #foodforests are Indigenous innovations. Let's bring them back!

If you're getting a manuscript final ready for the end of the year, my advice is: don't submit it to a journal now, it will only create frustration as editors and reviewers take holidays while journals are submerged with "managed to finish in 2022" manuscripts. Rather, preprint it now, and submit mid January, with the benefit of feedback and time to think, and editors and reviewers now slightly more available. #preprint #protip

Yes - I’ve had a lot of follows (thank you!) from grey profiles with no posts and no info in the bio. I won’t follow back accounts until I have a good idea of what they will be posting(!)
It doesn’t take long to write a couple of sentences and it’s worth posting a couple of times before following - the chances of building a network become much larger!

A good night for astrophotography. (At least, I think it was. I haven't processed everything yet.) This is the globular cluster M15. I found out on Saturday that there's a tiny planetary nebula buried in here. I was able to use a more professional image to locate *where* in here. But I still can't see it. But it's a beautiful cluster anyway.

Today's #DailyArchaeology is an old fav. These bone styluses, with gnawing on only one end, are proof that people chewed on their pencils nearly 2,500 years ago in ancient Athens

Only one shot from today’s hike. Hard to describe these landscapes with words. These are, again, remnants of 185 million years old wind-blown sand dunes of the Navajo Sandstone

It seems appropriate that we thank @ruud and others responsible for #moderation in mastodon.world instance.

We created our account here uninvited and from the very beginning we received a great #support.

On the very first day some Holocaust deniers tried to troll the account. The moderators reacted immediately and, which is very telling), we actually did not experience anything like this afterwords.

We also got #help when we had technical issues with account verification.

#thankyou

Whelp. the Christmas music of the 1950s is cheerier. Also, corny. And optimistic. I went back and listened to Perry Como.
