Mastodon Day
Friday November 18, 2022 - An Incredible Day In Internet History
You were here.
It started with the Twitter lockout. 10,000 new users an hour. Almost a quarter million migrated to Mastodon in one day. The servers struggled. Remarkably, admins all over the world built up capacity in real time. New users were patient. The system held.
It's running better now. There will be more hard days ahead, but people powered social media has arrived.
Gradual typing for Clojure.
malli is great.
You can:
- Annotate your functions with type hints, use it compile time, runtime, in the linter.
- Validate data, parse or generate it.
- Serialize schemas to edn files, database or send it via network.
- Visualize it with graphviz or plantuml.
- Add type schemas afterwards or when you need it.
And everything is blazing fast. This is clojure.spec done right IMO.
Would anyone using F# and Myriad like to co-present on Myriad with Dave at F# Exchange?
Bird site, nsfw, horribleness
Story time, kids.
So I used to be active on Tumblr way back in the day. The reason I left had nothing much to do with the site or its users, as it did with a rather horrible server failure.
Specifically, the software Tumblr used at the time to detect and block illegal pornography shat the bed completely. You couldn't search for anything without wanting to gouge out your eyeballs. I took one look at the situation, and got the fuck up out of there, never looked back.
That's what indifferent or incompetent server maintenance can do, kids. When you can't afford or can't retain good, skilled admins, who can fix things as they break, this is what happens. It doesn't fail all at once. Little things break, one by one.
Very soon now, Twitter will start seeing this sort of problem more and more. That, even more than Trump, is why my account there is no more.
One thing I never expected to happen when I got older that has… is that I’ve started to really enjoy and take comfort in domesticity. I grew up always on the go, always wishing I was somewhere else. It is strange look around and be happy with where I am at.
Even stranger to find that folding laundry has become meditative and cooking has become a source of creativity and joy. Unfortunately, dishes will always be terrible but I guess some things can’t be helped. 🤷🏻♀️
Certain folks believe Fediverse self-hosting should *never* be recommended to anyone because only eggheads should run social media.
To which I say:
1. The Internet is for everyone
2. If you want the technical acumen to self-host, you can learn it
3. There are risks, but the risks won't kill you
4. Leaving things in the hands of "experts" is unsustainable -- it's why so many laptops are designed to be unrepairable!
@freemo @Gargron @khird @trinsec this is ridiculous
I'm an adult I don't need to be told who not to interact with, this isn't Facebook we don't need to be mind controlled.
If other servers want to ban servers that's on them and if we share something from a banned server they would not see anything from the banned server.
"You use a software from kiwi farms" I call that Cow manure to be polite, how is it even relevant to moderation

Got an #emacs instance that is, dare I say, unresponsive to C-g?
"pkill -SIGUSR2 emacs" might just bail you out.

WOW! Im suprised at the generosity everyone. I mentioned in a reply thread a way to donate to QOTO, didnt even make a public announcement about it, and already people are donating 3 figures a pop. Extremely generous. Thank you all of you! I feel like if we are going to take donations we should post some means of thanking those that donate and are ok with the recognition.
I just realized something very powerful.....
I am sitting here, in my office, at a company I own a large chunk of, running the entire company, all because I made the discovery of a lifetime that will change the entire face of medicine int he next few years, save millions if not billions of lives, and about to go public on the stock exchange... everything suggests I havent just made the scientific discovery of a lifetime, saved the world (hopefully), but will probably be a billionaire in the next few years at this rate....
Yet here I am letting a few vile twerps on a small social media network get under my skin and hurt me... fuck them, they could only hope to do a fraction of the good I'm doing. All they want to do is lie, hurt, and tare down good people to make their own pathetic egos feel like it has some value...
I think im good, they only mattered because I let them.
