Friendly reminder that using those 'fancy text' generators to make your name or the text in your posts all pretty makes them inaccessible to screen reader users.
to you, they're just cute lettering you can just skip over. For a screen reader user like me, depending on various things, they could come out as
'mathematical small bold k mathematical small bold a mathematical small bold r mathematical small bold a',
'letter 126b letter 17dj letter 13y7dwiz'
or nothing at all.
I'm not sure off the top of my head how they appear on a Braille display but it's bound to be a right mess.
I don't particularly call any of those pretty, do you?
Plain boring text that is accessible to everyone is the new pretty.

Looks like the penguins in the wall on the Kelvin Walkway in Glasgow are already getting into the spirit of St Patrick's day with Guinness for breakfast!

Power back on after a three-day outage. Thank you Green Mountain Power and all the repair crews. It's going to be a good day.

Spoiler alert: reveals completed jigsaw puzzle

White Clouds and Crimson Trees by Tanomura Chokunyu. 155 pieces. Made by Artifact Puzzles.

Despite the small number of pieces, the nature of the picture and the design made this a fun challenge (approx. one 45-minute session with two people).

The design is based on one of the pentagonal tiling patterns discovered by amateur mathematician Marjorie Rice.

Another one done during an (ongoing) multi-day power outage.

I'm looking for my next full time engineering role. Do you need an awesome senior/staff platform/devops/infra engineer, with strong technical and sociotechnical skills?

I like
* dark haunted codebases
* building the tools, automation and capacity for frequent deploys to prod
* mentoring jr & mid-lvl engineers into leaders

I'm looking for:
* kind & respectful teammates
* remote
* lots of async collaboration
* good benefits
* a do-great-work then go-have-family-time culture

pls boost

Floating Town by Roch Urbaniak. Puzzle design by Chandler Millwood. 228 pieces. Made by Artifact Puzzles.

An average-difficulty Artifact puzzle (approx. two half-hour sessions with two people).

The design is based around V-shaped pieces and you can spot a Flying V guitar among the whimsies. Fun to do during a multi-day power outage.

Glacial Erratic

A glacial erratic is a rock that has been transported by glacial flow, and in some cases can be found hundreds of miles away from its original location. As a result, its lithology can be radically different from the place it was brought by its icy transportation - a stranger in a strange land. These wayward rocks can range in size from pebbles to boulders bigger than busses. Bonus: they can end up in weird places, precariously balanced, and in general, out of place as heck.

This surreal setting is part of the garden at Charleston Farmhouse, the home or weekend and holiday retreat of the Bloomsbury Group.
The levitating woman sculpture was added by Quentin Bell, son of the painter Vanessa Bell, in 1973.
The garden, like the house, was not intended to be tasteful or restrained, and it has been organic since the 80s.

Someone shared this in a meeting and it was the first time I'd seen it. Sharing on here for laughs

Incredible. A female falcon was equipped with a satellite tracking system in South Africa before migrating to Finland. Image shows tracker data. In just 42 days she flew over 10.000km at an incredible average of 230 km per day and almost in a straight line.

Many folks, including me, had a lot of questions after the news of Silicon Valley Bank’s implosion landed. In my piece today, I explain as best I can, given that I’m not an economist or banker, what happened, what it means, and what’s next. Hope it’s helpful! statuskuo.substack.com/p/what-
