For quite some time, I've been fiddling around with numerically evaluating the Painlevé transcendent. On a lark, I decided to visualize the solution \(w(z))\ of Painlevé I, \(w''=6w^2+z\) with the condition \(w(0)=0\), and the value of \(w'(0)\) continuously varying in the complex plane. I could only do a small portion for now, but it should be interesting to see the whole forest of poles dance.

Any experienced programmer worth their salt will tell you that •producing• code — learning syntax, finding examples, combining them, adding behaviors, adding complexity — is the •easy• part of programming.

The hard part: “How can it break? How will it surprise us? How will it change? Does it •really• accomplish our goal? What •is• our goal? Are we all even imagining the same goal? Do we understand each other? Will the next person to work on this understand it? Should we even build this?”

In the 1930s, Listerine cigarettes were created. The tobacco was infused with the same antiseptic oils used in the mouthwash for a "cooling and soothing effect." Listerine cigarettes were evidently not very popular because there is almost no record of their existence.

Had to advise a friend today and thought I would share again:

If you are experiencing a stressful time and that stress is primarily related to the way someone is interacting with you, take contemporaneous notes.

If you have a bad neighbor, unethical landlord, manipulative coworker, etc take notes about your interactions. Keep a back up.

When you end up in court, or mediation, or HR you're going to be the one with the most evidence.

Some interesting features of the Mexico City subway system … like secure bike storage INSIDE the station … women and children only areas at the front of the platforms and cars … an ideographic station wayfinding system … and even an in-station mini cinema!

My knitting machine clock, Tempus Nectit, is complete! I advanced it to the current time and mounted it on the wall. The white section is waste yarn to cast on, and the red stripe marks Valentine's Day. The shiny metal "tooth" marks the hour hand. Currently it is set to noon. The clock will advance every hour, completing a full circle (and row) every 12 hours, or two rows a day.

Now I have the massive task of the technical write-up for my site.
