I imagine they don't know about the "Content Warning" tag yet, or the etiquette of not overwhelming the feed.

Federated Timeline is static and notifies of New posts at the top. Giving you a chance to actually READ these, not an insanely scrolling marquee of new posts.

I have enabled a "Reduce UI animations" choice in Settings, which might have helped. But this alone is a HUGE improvement compared to the mastodon default web viewer.
