@gnyman @neilmadden @cR0w my server is older than 5 years too. But it's on the Internet so I patch that shit.

Remember in the 90s when computers screamed every time we connected them to the Internet, and we just thought they were overreacting?

@neilmadden @cR0w because anyone running a 5 year old fail2ban install has already been owned by something else. It's barely worth a CVE. I have no idea why these are issued for non-supported versions.

Poll only for #Blind/LowVision users who rely on #AltText. Is AltText generated with an LLM actually “better than nothing” as some argue? Please comment if you’re Blind or Low Vision, and please boost to get a good sample.

The plot thickens on the proscription of Palestine Action;

at short notice the judge originally intended to preside over the judicial review (starting tomorrow) has been replaced by a 3 Judge panel.

Now the key issue is why the change, and what impact that will (and perhaps was intended to) have on the conduct of the review & the conclusions reached.

This looks on the surface of it to be suspect, but much will depend on the conduct of the Review.

@tess

- you can cause social problems with code
- you can degrade the system if you don't understand how or why it works
- you can produce obstructions for someone else without understanding how they work or what they are doing.

Meta halted internal research that purportedly showed people who stopped using Facebook became less depressed and anxious.

What do you think #Mastodon - are all #socialmedia platforms equal?

@GrapheneOS it's also illegal to fail to provide encryption keys in the UK. I assume you'll be exiting here too?

France isn't a safe country for open source privacy projects. They expect backdoors in encryption and for device access too. Secure devices and services are not going to be allowed. We don't feel safe using OVH for even a static website with servers in Canada/US via their Canada/US subsidiaries.

We no longer have any active servers in France and are continuing the process of leaving OVH. We'll be rotating our TLS keys and Let's Encrypt account keys pinned via accounturi. DNSSEC keys may also be rotated. Our backups are encrypted and can remain on OVH for now.

The details of 19,000+ people fleeing the Taliban were leaked in the most serious data breach in British history. At least 49 people have been killed as a result.

And yet the Information Commissioner's Office shrugs.

This isn't an isolated case. It's part of a trend of the ICO not using its enforcement powers.

There's a correlation between the lack of formal regulatory action and a surge in data breaches in the UK.

Enough!

In "Gödel, Escher, Bach" there's a passage about record players where Hofstadter posits that every machine has a particular crafted input which is inimical to its design. For my particular connecteome, this is the accurate spelling of the words: Gingrich, bureaucracy, Caribbean
