My TedEd lesson is now officially out, sort of a sneak peek into the macabre and fascinating world of parasitoid wasps and how they attack different preys. It was an absolute joy working on the script and seeing it animated with the production team!

Spotted this incarcerated fern eking out an existence in a small niche on a wall next to a canal on my way to work this morning. First office day of 2023.

In Poland, waxwing birds love to eat fermented fruit, get drunk and then lie insensible on the pavement.
People collect them and put them in a safe place until they sober up... #OurBeautifulWorld
Thanks to @StateofPoland for the photo.

Took a walk to the Pont d’Arc in the Ardèche early in the new year. Although the day was sunny, down in the gorge the mist was rising along the river. This really gave the Pont d’Arc an otherworldly feel, coupled with this leafless gnarled tree.

In other trees nearby, there was river debris caught up in the branches above our heads from recent flood events. These trees go through a lot.

#Mosstodon - The sun broke through this morning and we enjoyed a walk in the Royal National Park on the Forest Path. It's a lovely easy walk under 5kms.
Back to work tomorrow, this has been a fantastic break.

. Spotted these three today rising out of the leaf litter like tiny sizewell reactors. Think they are pigskin puffballs but I’m no expert. In the second photo I like how the stump is becoming overwhelmed by fungi; a nice, healthy image of decomposition. .

I mainly look at soil invertebrates, but occasionally will do macrophotography of other things as they wander by - here's a collection of some interesting insect photographs I've taken over the years!

Something for taken today and yesterday at Wanstead Flats. Not very colourful, but I like the seam of bracket fungi running the length of the tree trunk.

Not a caterpillar - On a frosty May morning, a group of European Bee-eaters perched on a branch gave the impression of a caterpillar at first glance. The vibrant colours of their feathers, with shades of green, blue, and yellow, seemed to blend together and create a fluffy, caterpillar-like appearance. It's also a winning image in Adult Category of European Wild Wonders photo competition, November 2011. José Luis Rodríguez

So what happened with these fungi is, they were busy making little horizontal shelves on a dead tree and then the tree fell flat on its side and messed up their world and now they are busy making little horizontal shelves on their old, now-vertical shelves.

Anyway, #goals, also #mushtodon
