Thats a poor excuse and easily solved in my eyes for two reasons.
1) From an API perspective a new activity pub update entry would not delete the original post. So there would still be a trail in the API side itself.
2) From the front-end perspective allowing a user to browse the edit history with a link would mitigate any fears. People could easily see if a message was tampered with and someone could siply look to see which edit a person commented on if it became relevant.
