So, my first toot will be about a much debated topic within academic libraries: transformative agreements
The University of Lorraine has issued a statement to explain its strategy and indicate the type of agreements she is willing to support: bit.ly/3wnihgi

I hope the two guys that keep Google Scholar going as a pet project didn't get laid off. Just as a quiet reminder of the fragile contingency of this core academic service.

Pour le week-end, l'entrée du Gîte de France de Jérôme et Eugénie, qui donne envie d'été.

Bonne lecture !

Non-profit journals as a solution to open science?

Publishers charge researchers incredible amounts to remove paywalls from their own papers...and make unbelievable profits from doing so. Several have an >30% profit margin.

Initiatives such as @PeerCommunityIn provide an alternative: open access, non-profit journals that are free to publish in.

Zotero just informed me that a paper in my database has been retracted. What an excellent feature for a reference management system to have! As if I needed additional reasons to love Zotero even more than I already did 🤩

Congratulations to the first five recipients of the Global Participation Fund “Community Development and Outreach” and “Technical Integration” grants! 🎉

We are excited to see these projects take off and encourage future applicants to stay tuned for more opportunities to submit proposals.

Look for the next round of applications in the spring. bit.ly/3ZLJqqB #openresearch

Whoa.
Manuscript sent to @ScienceDirect@twitter.com's International Journal of Hydrogen Energy gets desk-rejected because it did not have enough citations from its own journal.
That is one way to get an impact factor of 7.

@rastinza @erinnacland @MatteoCarandini @academicchatter Do you mean Sci-Hub allows academics to keep publishing closed access, knowing that Sci-Hub gives free (but illegal) access?

A more hopeful reading is that free access, whether via PMC, self-archiving, authors emailing, or Sci-Hub, steadily undermines toll access and enables libraries to cancel or renegotiate Big Deals and move to a world of universal, immediate, open access. #OpenAccess

#Twitter vs. #Mastodon: from #platforms to #protocols

«The reputational crisis caused in Twitter by Elon Musk’s erratic management, and the consequent loss of users and advertisers, raises concerns about the future of science communication on social networks».
