Greetings tooters!

this account is for Dr. Jason "Jay" R. Patton (aka EarthJay) and I march for science.

His main education/outreach effort is voluntarily writing up posts on earthjay.com. These are for and events of interest, sorted in different ways; sorted by year here: earthjay.com/?page_id=3220

they are an engineering geologist (PG license 9758) who serves the public while at the California Geological Survey, Seismic Hazards and Tsunami programs. conservation.ca.gov/cgs/

he has been studying the tectonics of the Cascadia subduction zone (a convergent plate boundary fault system) for over 25 years (MS thesis at cal poly humboldt, dept geology). he is an adjunct professor at this dept. geology.humboldt.edu/

they studied marine sedimentary records (submarine landslide deposits called turbidites) of earthquakes offshore of Sumatra/Cascadia for my marine geology & geophysics PhD at oregon state university. ceoas.oregonstate.edu/

capital letters are over rated but chocolate and oxford commas are not.

Twitter was really useful for finding people to write about. I’d often stumble across incredible stories of discovery, innovation and leadership. I hope #ScienceMastodon can be the same. If you come across extraordinary, inspirational #WomenInSTEM / researchers from other historically excluded groups, please let me know! #TwitterMigration

@maryeffrancis Great question!

Some basics of social media #accessibility that are useful for pretty much all platforms:

- capitalize each word in multi-word hashtags
- add alt text to your images. Actually describe the image; don't just use the space for jokes or Easter eggs
- don't overuse emojis (the screen reader reads each one)
- if you create videos, caption them
- if you share a video that doesn't have captions, provide a description

#AltText #captions #descriptions #LimitedEmojiUse

Did you know that if you capitalize each word in a multi-word hashtag, #ScreenReaders can read them as words, but if you leave them lowercase, they can't? Well, now you know! So, for #accessibility, please capitalize words when there's more than one in a hashtag.

@explorergrace Hi Grace, hope you will remind people about the wonderful tradition here of using Alt text. It makes me as a blind person feel very welcome, and not all newcomers are getting the memo. Thanks.

its interesting - when you view someones profile from mastodon, you can only see the people they're following *on your server*. if you want to see their full follow list you have to open their profile on their native server.

@jentaub got some clarification on this matter from @Curator . Not a strict rule, but best practices across the fediverse and exhibits a distinctive kindness. Sorry about the confusion :blobangel:

@Penelope@ieji.de @sophie

I had the same question - I believe it's Content Warning

A new presentation on impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to sea-level rise prepared for #COP27 by @Co2ley, @MarjolijnHaasnoot Elham Eli and I - with support from many, including Roshanka Ranasinghe and other WGI colleagues @bobkopp Saiful Islam and Karina Von Schuckmann

#introduction
Hi! I'm a new #tech grad

I currently work on the #Cloud ☁️ #msft specifically in #PowerPlatform mostly building low-code apps while trying to admin the thing for our org

I watch a lot of TV📺 & love learning about #psychology & #biology
Located in 🇨🇦 #Canada

A group of European Union policy professionals is trying to coordinate an exit from Twitter lemmy.ml/post/583144

Well I suppose it's time to re-introduce myself.

I'm a relatively late in career returnee to geology; my science is highly operationalised, i'm a #geohazard analyst shift leader at the #NGMC - National Geohazards Monitoring Centre - part of the #Geonet program here at #GNS Science in #Aotearoa #NZ.

Yes, it's shift work; we're right at the sharp pointy end of geohazard response, in a 24/7 operation. Varied interests, most recently working on #Taupo #seismicity analysis, and a W-phase project.

Hi everyone, I’m Dr Scott J. Davidson - Lecturer in Ecosystem Resilience working on all things #wetlands and #peatlands ! Big fan of swamps, sphagnum and my cat Ralph

Are you looking for information on felt (or significant) earthquakes? Fast?
Here are a few links for rapid earthquake information.

In Canada:
EarthquakesCanada - earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/
where automated information on M4 or larger #earthquakes in/near #Canada will be posted with 4-5 minutes

Global:
USGS: earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquake

EMSC: emsc-csem.org/#2w

RaspberryShake:
shakenet.raspberryshake.org/

*** Also - check with your local seismological monitoring organisation.

It took me several days to decide how to respond to the chaos on #Twitter caused by Elon Musk’s behavior, but I had to do it bc I run public outreach for my research institute (and we get cited A LOT in the media).

I have peace of mind now that I’ve decided to simply pause all Twitter activity for now and instead rely on #Substack, listservs, email (I already do these 3) and now @Mastodon.

I sure hope there are reporters on here!

Hi folks, another Twitter migrator here. I'm an #Inupiaq assistant prof studying #Microbiology #ecology and #hostMicrobe interactions. I also dabble in #beadwork #running and I am a single parent who moved across the country at the start of the pandemic. I love following the news, mostly though podcasts, and I used to be an avid reader. Oh, and I hike and talk about #DEIJ issues and support mentees in #academia. Trying to find my place here.

Hi, this is Greta. You are welcome to follow me here, if you prefer planet earth to planet mars.

An #introduction: I do very interdisciplinary #geoscience & #oceanography with interests in #tsunamis, #volcanism, #hydrogeology & coastal/mtn #meteorology. Writer for NOAA #PTWC. Researcher for 17 yrs at #SIO, PhD from #MIT #WHOI Joint Program. Now relocated to remote Pacific NW to help elderly parents and always looking for remote consulting work! BA in Art, MA in English Comp & Rhetoric, previous work in #DataVisualization, satellite imagery. Fun - #snow #ice #mountains + many animals!

Hi! I'm a disaster researcher, TV & movie science consultant, field geophysicist, & freelance science communicator (#SciComm focus on #drr #space #CanSci & #geo). I'm usually somewhere along the West Coast of North America.
I run #YouFoundARock & #RockCheck. I’m the admin of #MinCup, and give tasting notes on rocks.
