So many people are having a bad first experience with Mastodon because they're using the official app which is lacking features, doesn't allow image uploads randomly, has random slowness, and doesn't give you easy access to the two most active feeds where you can find people (Local and Federated).

Please switch to Metatext, Tusky, or Tooot for a better mobile experience (or even use a browser).

Out of the >15k users that joined this week, over 11k are on the official apps.

New paper alert! This is my 1st co-first author paper from my PhD.

We show that the foraminiferal I/Ca paleo-oxygenation proxy can be measured alongside other trace elements in acidic solutions 🧪 🥼

New from Eos.org: #Climate change and its effects are not #gender neutral: Women and girls are hit the hardest, as the #climatecrisis deepens already existing gender inequalities.

I’m boldly going where I haven’t gone before, which is right here at this site. Apparently this is a “toot.” I would appreciate a follow!

Hello! 👋 I'm new here, so here's a little #introduction about who I am & what I do as a scientific researcher 🌎

I'm a community #ecologist by training & a lot of my #PhD research was based on #TropicalForest #carbon storage in Brazil & Panama. I now lead a project investigating decision-making, trade-offs & conflicts involving people, #biodiversity, #energy & #justice, using #hydropower #dams as a model system.

I also love running, walking my dog & being in wild places 😀

I didn't take this photo but I was with my husband when he did. It was breathtaking up on Stenbury Down on the Isle of Wight, watching the mist roll in at sunset. The sheep were surprised to see us and for once the weather did what we'd hoped it would do! #SheepofMastodon

Everyone please be aware that the service we used to use that provided tickers went down and doesnt plan to go back up.. This unfortunately slows down the default theme.

As such I switched the default theme to the no-ticket theme and this works just fine. However im not sure it will help for people already signed up on the server.

To fix the problem please go intto your preferences and change the theme to the no-ticket theme.

@radehi wonderful... tickers were a styling element that showed what server a post was from, sadly is its gone now.

I HAD to bring this gorgeous Norwegian #rock face with me from the bird site :)

This rock face was likely #gneiss, a foliated #metamorphic rock where light minerals and dark minerals form in alternating bands due to high heat and pressure. This rock was further complexly folded and refolded during continental collisions and mountain building.

The rock face also has an unusual & beautiful texture caused by the more erodible bands partially eroding.

As we don’t need timeline cleansers here who wants to see a baby sloth? Me!!!!

Learning this new platform -- so here is an #introduction .

I'm an introvert who is passionate about #genealogy and #cats. My day job is wrangling data and I might mention #SQL.

I am a blue dot living near the east coast of the US, but am a native of the high desert of Northern #Arizona. I love #photos from #AZ and around the world.

At under 70, I hate to admit that I have great-grandchildren. I want them to live in a clean world with unlimited opportunities.

Since there was interest, I have set up a Google Form/Sheet for Earth Scientists on Mastodon.

Interested in #geology and #EarthScience and want people to find you? Add your name.

However, please do not add anyone who is not you without explicit permission - some people might prefer to be discovered more organically, or not at all.

Ok let's take this thing for a spin..

So, I wrote a book chapter recently! Disproportionately excited bc I'm private sector, so publishing anything is not like, a thing for me. Working on that.

Anyway, in it I talk about how to usefully examine climate risk as a decision-maker for a high-impact hazard with big error bars:

Conclusions? Read on... 🧵

While I agree with these authors that the citizen science app #iNaturalist is an essential source of biodiversity data, their conclusion of “experts should all give free labor to make it work” is really odd.

The conclusion should be, “this vital service is a public good, and like other public goods it merits public funding to support more expert public servants who make it work.”

I scribbled fun notes over the pages of a recent paper of mine, summarizing and explaining each section. I've gotten good feedback on this idea, so I'm sharing it here in the hopes that others are inspired to create accessible versions of their papers!
