This holiday season, break the ice by telling your family and friends how baby octopuses sometimes ride on jellyfish like little hats.

I think that Twitter is a brand-identity/self-promotion site that is marketed as social media.
and mastodon is sociable media. Truly a place to meet new people and discuss.
I love this site.
I offered a suggestion on Github mastodon. Of changing "Follow" to 'Listen to?" and "Following" to "Listening." and "Unfollow" to "Walk away." I feel it is a healthier framing of the power dynamic than followers and also makes it more personal.
Important but long post about content warnings
Hey everyone, if you are new(ish) here on #mastodon and more particularly epicure.social may I introduce you to the "content warning" concept.
It's one of Mastodon's features for keeping the whole experience here more polite and civilised.
HOW IT WORKS: When you post content that, to some, may be offensive, troubling or unwanted, you add a "content warning" (click on the "CW" initials bottom of the publishing box, or on mobile it's the "!" icon). This hides the content in the feed. Each viewer can decide if they want to click to unhide or not.
Check @bbcworld for examples.
CWs are not censorship. They just stop the feeds becoming a twitter-like mire.
For epicure.social - which is focused on food and wine - please use a CW for anything potentially offensive or NSFW, especially if off-topic.
If anyone wants to help on the United Federation of Instances website let me know.
I have a first working version done. But welcome any improvements (including to layout) as well as some help filling in some of the documentation.
There is also some room for scripts to help make the whole thing work, we can talk if anyone wants to help there.
Anyone, anyone interested in helping let me know. I will send a link to the current website in private at request, I just dont want to share it with the world until its more complete.
Life pro tip for abled folk: look out for disabled people. Remember that you are only ever *temporarily* abled. Sooner or later, one way or the other, everyone joins our ranks. Even if you are not moved to support disabled folk for other reasons, it is in your own best interests to fight with us to erase stigma, to improve accessibility, to create equal opportunities. Listen to disabled people; let our voices be heard. We are the pioneers living your future.

Just a reminder, as I get this a lot, but joining the United Federation of Instances doesnt require **any** time contribution of the part of its admins or instances. Any voting is totally optional to participate. As long as your instance follows our code of ethics you can join, nothing else required other than to federate to other UFoI instance.
DM me if you want to talk more, are are at over 200,000 members and will be open to more over the next week or so before membership will become harder and more formalized.
all intances welcome, from single user to large instances.

A lot of Mastodon instance admins are either getting their first hosting bill or getting a very increased bill from extreme growth and usage. Some may be experiencing bill shock.
Please make sure your paying/supporting them!
Twitter was free because you were the product. Mastodon doesn't work this way.
Many instances list a patreon or donation links on their about page.

My team at work just launched new research on the #TwitterMigration: We analyze which platforms are growing - especially #Mastodon, #Tumblr & #Post.
We look at which sites users are adding to their Twitter bios, posting to their friends about & downloading apps for.
Please do boost this, and love to hear any comments or feedback on it!
