Lake Retba in Senegal is one of several pink lakes in the world. It's even saltier than the dead sea, and many locals there work as salt harvesters.

The pink colour comes from harmless microbes living in the water, which use strongly coloured pigments as a kind of sunscreen. Some of them use a type of photosynthesis which may have evolved independently of plants.

I'm not happy with how the Wil Wheaton situation was resolved. An admin was overwhelmed with frivolous reports about him and felt forced to exile him. I've said before that I think it sets a dangerous precedent on how a large group of people can mobilize to drive anyone off the fediverse. Mob rule is universally dangerous: Mods and admins must examine evidence and decide based on wrongdoing and danger, and not on how many times someone was reported.

@wilw You should come to #QOTO we wouldn't ban you and everyone would love to have you here.

"if you don't like where you are, go make your own instance" is uncomfortably like "if you don't like your neighbourhood, build a house somewhere else" -- it presumes a whole shitload of privilege and resources.

Instead, it's much better to point people to the list of instances, e.g. the list of essentially free housing they can trivially move to. Just think before you say "just do [enormously difficult technical thing] lmao" like it's eating ice cream.

Anyway, take your victory lap and collect your prizes. You've made it clear that I'm not welcome here, and even though I disagree with the action this Admin is taking (banning me when I didn't break any rules doesn't seem right), I respect and support the Admin's decision to run their instance the way they see fit.

Please do your very best to be kind to each other. The world is a terrible place right now, and that's largely because it is what we make it.

Right now i just have my paypal donate for my open source company. which is a different entity so wouldnt be the best way to do it. I will set up a paypal donate for #QOTO at some point in case anyone wants to help out. I appreciate it. I'll keep you informed on that front when i get it set up.
