Misery and poverty are so absolutely degrading, and exercize such a paralysing effect over the nature of men, that no class is ever really conscious of its own suffering. They have to be told of it by other people, and they often entirely disbelieve them.

I believe pay is directly proportional to how hard it is to hide the fact that one's own job is useless or even harmful to society. That would explain essential workers having such low wages. What's tragic is that we value our own work according to this principle, and that's why cleaners feel useless while hedge-fund managers think of themselves as essential.

Thanksgiving, the american holiday where we celebrate indigenous people saving our asses by in no way doing anything to honor them and instead make it all about us... ahh good ol' america culture.

By the way, in this video, or maybe in another one, Glenn points out that one of the justifications bin Laden gives in the letter for 9/11 attacks (i.e., that, because the US have free elections, everyone was responsible for the actions of their government and that made them an acceptable target) is the same one the Israeli government uses for the genocide in Gaza (i.e., that a part of the population, not even a majority, voted for Hamas in 2005, so they're all Hamas and that's why they should all be blown to smithereens, children and women included).

@josemanuel it's somewhat ironic that the same people will absolutely encourage people to read books that the right wing wants to ban from schools. i mean, if you're only against censoring books that you like, you're not really against censorship. it's nonsense.

Wow, even archive.org have removed access to The Guardian's translation of bin Laden's “Letter to America”. I thought they had only one job and it was _the exact opposite_ of that.

Here's one of the few journalists with a spine making the case for why you should be allowed to read it:

Ordering a pizza online is more hassle than doing it on the phone, and it destroys jobs, too. No wonder they have to lure you into it with discounts. Fortunately, I don't eat pizza often enough to make it worth my while.

Sadly, I'm missing it, but you don't have to.

Everyone has the vague idea that cell phones made the world a dumber place, but the reasons why are usually vague. I know the reason: it's because cell phones have radically altered the bathroom.

It used to be possible to roll up a newspaper under your arm and take a one-hour shit in perfect silence. This is when people have their best ideas, the ideas that move all their other ideas forward: when you are doing one thing and that thing is nothing.

That's how it all went sideways, man. Your fuckin' phone buzzes. Is it your side hustle, or is someone spamming you to promote their side hustle? Someone's knocking at the door. Music starts playing: the woman said you were crazy for declaring the waterproof bluetooth shower speaker "an abomination before the Lord", but now she has clicked the wrong shit and some douchebags' fucking podcast about AI startups is stopping you from staring blankly at the wall in peace. An alert on the phone: overdraft fees triggered by microtransactions. The only thoughts you have had in that room for months are about which politicians to kill to bring back peaceful shits.

This is how we used to take dumps back in the day and it was FINE:
