👏 ✅ PASSES

I have just finished rolling out the Python version of the R package 'statcheck", created by prof. Michèle Nuijten.

Statcheck can be used to extract and analyze statistical results from scientific articles.

Currently working on adding the option to extract tables.

If anyone would like to check it out, here is the repo:

Hi Everyone! Another Twitter (@LauraAzolla) deserter here, hoping to do some science networking online via an alternative route. I'm a scientist, lecturer, climber, sailor and photographer. I'm finishing my PhD thesis at @utrechtuniversity on Azolla #fern #metagenomes and #genomics (github.com/lauralwd/azolla_phd). Also, I just started a new job teaching bioinformatics to PhD candidates, also at UU. I'm an #openscience enthusiast, my code and writings are on (github.com/lauralwd)!

@kareemcarr
They are different tools for similar (but different) tasks, in my opinion.

@niedakh
One instance is okay :)
But mind that, the English-speaking moderators at your instance probably don't know Polish.
For that reason, I have second account at lewacki.space for toots in Polish.

But, using such data to "target" victims of human trafficking is more than justified.

@Orangejuice @OtwartaNauka
In my opinion? There should at least be a vital interest of that person if we don't have their direct and conscious consent. In other words, using data "against" is abuse, as in the case of the transphobic reason mentioned earlier.
I'm in line with UE rules here.

I've just read the Vice article about Transgender Dataset.
There is nothing wrong (in my cautious opinion) with teaching AI with any data we have access to.
BUT there is so much wrong with:
1) doing "science" with an obviously transphobic reason of "hormone-taking terrorists";
2) processing and publishing sensitive data without consent or "substantial public interest"
3) faking efforts to contact people whose data somebody uses

It is important to consider how and why we process (not just sensitive) information. Our goal should be to avoid doing harm at every step, not only following the law and ethical standards.

As part of one project, we downloaded a public dataset of Polish active psychologists and attached their public emails to it. It is possible to access the dataset at GitHub, but emails are hidden, so predatory journals will not be able to use it.

GPT-3 is going to make finding quality information on the internet a nightmare. The generated text will look good to search engines, and garbage sites that rely on SEO for clicks will just have GPT-3 write about whatever the big topics of the day are. This could even be easily automated.

@UlrikeHahn Agree. This is the US way of dealing with these situations. Manage the reputation, do not have the difficult conversation about what actually went wrong and how to prevent it in the future. This is not really an example of vision and leadership from APS and it is likely detrimental to future editorships.

@atomicpoet
Not yet. But bookmarked it :) Thanks for useful suggestion by the way.

Because it's not about 'freemo'. Anybody can like him or not, but there is no hate speech at qoto and no evidence of it.
But qoto is usually banned due to personal disagreements between admins.

Mastodon explained in simple terms, a thread:

I've decided to make a simple explanation of how Mastodon servers work. It's a lot easier to understand than people think, so this is a good starting point for all new Mastodon users.

The first thing you need to understand is Mastodon is federated, like Russia...

@atomicpoet
There is qoto.org on the list with obviously false reasons of 'lack of moderation.
Block lists without clear rules and evidence can be very harmful to fediverse.

re: Transphobia, Homophobia, Middle East

Please consider calling for Arabic moderators.

A lot of Arabic queers (and other marginalised groups) are using this platform as a safe space from the aggression we go through on daily basis.

And Arab homophobic users are bringing their hostility to the platform and we shouldn't allow it.
