I stand partially corrected, the US produces 13k barrels/day and consumes 19k, but the US doesn't really NEED oil from the middle east. The role that the middle east plays is to stabilize the price of oil by selling oil to everyone else (Europe, India, China, Japan, Korea).
Ironically, KSA DOES sell oil to the US, and then the US refines it and turns it right back around as diesel fuel destine for Europe. But this really doesn't *need* to be happening.
The biggest loser from a oil crunch IMO will be China, who has to import ALL of their oil. The biggest winner will be Russia.
