eg, in 🇪🇸 :

  • Women are the majority of students enrolled, and get the most degrees, in all areas of study — and that includes “sciences” and “health sciences” (the only exception being “engineering and architecture”). (Source: INE, data 2016/2017)
  • There are as many women “scientists and engineers” as men (49.3% female). (Source: Eurostat)
  • There are more women than men employed in “science and technology” (53.5% female). (Source: INE)

Antonio Escohotado, one of my dearest intellectual heroes, died today 😢

He was a true erudite, a polymath, and a free soul.

He devoured the classics, opposed dictator Franco, was the fiercest of Communists, pioneered the hippy revolution in , travelled the world, studied and experimented with most drugs known to mankind, changed his views, lectured , taught himself a few languages, became the most articulate , wrote the definitive tomes on a variety of scientific subjects, changed his views again, and shared it all along the way.

What I admire the most, though, is that he read everything under the sun. Primary sources, secondary sources, biographies, commentary. And he seemed to remember it all. set out to deeply understand something — be it , , , — and damned studied every single relevant page there is about the subject, tirelessly, for years, until he emerged with the most robust of opinions about the topic, and a comprehensive view in the form of a new .

I am very inspired by him to always freaking read the classics, and the sources.

And I have always lamented that his fame in the English-speaking world wasn’t commensurate with his many merits.

His last months were the chronicle of a death foretold: he chose to leave, and did so in his own terms, with dignity, in his beloved Ibiza.

I went to see him at public events here in a couple of times. He was a giant, some unfortunate views or quotations notwithstanding.

I miss him already.

There’s a huge imbalance in , yes. In my country (🇪🇸 ), last year there were 751 work-related deaths, of which 696 were men (source: last available official report by Ministerio de Trabajo y Economía Social).

  • 1,165% more than die at work.
  • Men are >12× more likely to die at work than women.
  • Of all people who die at , >92% are men.

@tripu I'm not sure if I agree or disagree with you based on this, but the work deaths stat was kind of a shock when I first heard it. iirc men are...

🔬 Some notable exceptions to that global trend:

In the 🇺🇸 , the influence of income has vanished, and support depends solely (and strongly!) on education (highly educated ↔ leftist).

In (epitome: 🇸🇪 ) it’s the opposite: education became irrelevant, and political preference depends only on income (perhaps because they are wealthy, egalitarian countries?).

🇵🇹 hasn’t changed like the other countries: there the Right is still supported mostly by educated (and rich) voters. (NB: in the 50’s and 60’s, Portugal was a dictatorship).

🇮🇹 is the rare case where leftist parties ended up being the parties of the richest segment of the population. I wouldn’t read too much into this, though, as the political landscape there during the last decade or two has been a populist mess.

🇪🇸 is the country where education and income tell you the least about political preferences! There’s still the secular correlation “high income ↔ right wing”, but it’s very weak today. (NB: in the 50’s and 60’s, Spain was also a dictatorship).

When I was younger, I thought that the defining distinction between and was solidarity — as in, the former necessarily has to have way more of it than the latter.

Gradually I came to realise that characterisation is problematic for three reasons:

  1. want to impose , which is an oxymoron (by definition, you can’t mandate voluntary inclinations, such as affection or desire, on people).
  2. In practice, and at least in my own country (), the Left has become pro-independence and sympathetic towards secessionists (but more solidarity would require larger unions, stronger federations — not the richest regions going their own way).
  3. Sometimes the Right puts in practice more solidarity towards certain groups or causes (eg, non-elites, non-conformists, disadvantaged people who reject the orthodoxy) than the Left itself.

I now think that the ratio personal freedom vs economic freedom better categorises Left vs. Right (cf ). I like to think of those two dimensions as “ to do what you please with your body” (food, drugs, euthanasia, suicide, sex, read, speech, thought, association, religion) and “freedom to do what you please with your property” (save, invest, buy, sell, donate, build, trade, settle).

This is not a defence of or , by the way — I do believe certain restrictions on both kinds of liberties are necessary for any society to function at all.

«En 2019, la mediana del mensual real de los entre 18 y 35 años era menor que en 1980, con caídas que van desde el 26% para aquellos con edades entre 30 y 34 años hasta el 50% para los de 18 a 20 años. Estas caídas se deben principalmente a una reducción muy acusada de la duración de sus empleos y a un aumento del peso del a tiempo parcial.»
