@glennmagusharvey @bookstodon You're welcome!

Not all of J-novel... that's a particularly complicated set up. 🤷‍♂️

@glennmagusharvey Sorry. I was just remembering the way J-Novel Club sell their ePub ebooks.

Premium ebooks are EPUB3 and are not available anywhere else, and can only be obtained by exchanging them for J-Novel Coins.

But you can get 699 coins each month by becoming a Premium Member. Which means you can get a free Premium ebook each month using those coins... 🤔

Wish it was less complicated.

@glennmagusharvey

Here's the page, in case it helps.

You get extras with Premium Ebooks too, which must make it an attractive offer to fans.

@libreture Do you mean this page?
j-novel.club/subscribe

I was looking around their site and also became rather confused. It seems that stuff is sold for a base price of 699 Coins per volume, and bundles of 699 Coins are sold for US$6.99, but subscriptions change this.

What's the EPUB3 format? Is this an open-source or proprietary format?

@glennmagusharvey

That's right. I got in a tangle trying to work it out too.

You basically get a book free each month if you subscribe to their Premium Membership... I think. 😭

ePub3 is the latest version of the open ebook standard. And ePub is backwards compatible, so they'll work on any device/app that understands ePub2. 😁

@libreture BTW, since I have your attention, may I ask: I've noticed that epub files seem to have different page numbering depending on my view settings (and viewer and device etc.). Is this behavior intended?

@glennmagusharvey

Yes, ePubs are 're-flowable' ebooks, so the text always fills the screen (page). So if you set your text to large type, you'll have more 'pages'. Small text - fewer pages.

Percentage is always a better way of thinking of how much of an ebook you've read. But finding that out always depends on how the device or app chooses to display things.

@glennmagusharvey From what I remember from the time I studied the format, ‘intended’ would not be the right word. It's more of a side effect.

Again, if memory serves me correctly, the designer has ways to control pagination, but doing so makes very little sense. It would be too much work for no real gain.
