"The problem is that, in our world, artists have to make a living through their art by selling it, and so they have to think about its market value. We’re introducing a technology that can utterly wreck people’s livelihoods, and in a free-market economic system, if your skills decline in value, you’re screwed."

Remember when software came with manuals, written by professional technical writers with design and layout by professional designers? #retrocomputing
The viable concrete alternative is to let people work things out together without coercion. There is no singular "system" that must be defined and implemented for everyone everywhere, in place of the current one.
A person I’ve known for a long time tells me “We have made some experiments with our PFA (Probabilistic Finite
Automata) technology to detect/separate texts generated by ChatGPT and
humans. The results are spectacularly good.”
This person has exceptionally high technical credibility in my mind. If anyone out there is looking for LLM bot detection, I’d be happy to introduce.
@anildash There was an xkcd that stuck on this:
"I never trust anyone who's more excited about success than about doing the thing they want to be successful at."
There is often a massive gap between what managers think they are telling their teams they want, and what teams are hearing they need to accomplish (and often the actual business need is a third non-overlapping thing entirely). Instead, management view of team pains tends to be oriented around motivation, skill, and productivity. A lack of these things gets framed as the worker's fault. Manager-designed solutions are the software equivalent of worker surveillance or team building exercises.
Polska to kraina oblężonych twierdz. #polska #polityka #psychologia
why yes, maybe you should more closely examine a completely unaccountable, barely regulated market full of predatory shitweasels that routinely sell sensitive consumer location, browsing, and even mental health data to a long list of dodgy scumbags and global governments
@clive @pluralistic Excellent article on the Luddites, Clive! That was one thing I didn't get with my weaving degree ... a history of weaving or important events related to it. Heck, one of my work-study assignments had me photographing women's art out of books so they could be used as slides for teaching in art history classes. Most of the slides to that point featured only men's art.
"There is infinite political will and bottomless appetite for money creation when VC-backed companies face distress, but when the death of your parents is followed by years of brutal debt-collector armbreakers chasing you from phone number to phone number, it's just crickets." On the bailout of #SVB. And guillotines, by a @pluralistic unusually on edge. https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/15/mon-dieu-les-guillotines/#ceci-nes-pas-une-bailout
"This Bing chat thing is a mess. It keeps making things up and giving weird advice."
"Don't worry GPT-4 will fix everything. It'll be a revolution."
Some time later.
"GPT-4 is out! It's a huge leap forward and fixes most of the issues you experienced with earlier systems"
"Fine. I'd like to see the people who've been testing Bing to repeat their tests once it's updated"
"No need! The new Bing has been using GPT-4 this whole time! Isn't it magical? Fixes everything."

Ludwig von Mises worked for a fascist government and explicitly praised fascism. Murray Rothbard was a Hitler apologist. Hans Hermann Hoppe writes for a neo-Nazi publication.
Propertarians are lousy with fascists because fascism is fundamentally an extremist reaction by a capital class to a (perceived) existential threat to its dominance.
Propertarians aren’t actually concerned about “freedom” in any general sense, but rather the freedom of property owners to act and dominate others as they please insofar as their property allows them.
