Not one person has tried to sell me crypto since I opened my account on Mastodon and I love it!

I've seen a few people ask what happens if the instance you are on closes down.

Tradition on Mastodon is that all the people on that instance are buried alive with the admin in a giant pyramid made of old phones and laptops. 😵

The four stages of Mastodon user:
* what’s a Mastodon
* I feel lost and alone how does this work
* oh wow this is actually pretty cool
* I’m an instance admin now

So, I’ve seen major media outlets such as the New York Times very active here. Because I’m a newcomer, I don’t know if they were before. That doesn’t seem to bode well for Elmo’s Neighborhood.

One of the folks I know from Twitter said today in a group, “I just got this job two years ago…this was my first good job” — meaning a job that allowed them to support their family. And then their voice broke. I’ve been thinking about that since it happened.

That’s what Elon did to a lot of people.

I am hiring a product manager for platforms and architecture for the City of San Francisco's digital team. It's a union job in a team that is supportive and kind. Please boost!

Mastodon habits I'm trying to lock in, rather than revert to my Twitter habits:

1) use CWs liberally
2) when threading, set first post to "public" and the rest to "not listed"
3) don't forget the description text when posting images (had to work on that in Twitter too)
4) throw in hashtags like it was Tumblr or Instagram when you want to reach beyond your followers
5) pin and visit hashtags to find more people
6) boost a lot

Twitter played a powerful role in sustaining & strengthening the fight for racial justice. The truth about racist and violent policing in America - a truth that Black people have lived with and known for a century - was exposed to the world on Twitter.

Remember when people kept saying that w/a Black President & AG we no longer needed civil rights activism & lawyering? First images of #MikeBrown’s body, then videos of #WalterScott, #PhilandoCastile & too many others showed what many of us had been saying. There’s another America beyond the DC optics.

Hard to imagine how we would have made it through COVID - with all of the uncertainty and fear, and with the deliberate disinformation churned out daily by the President - without Twitter. We are in an age of pandemics and will need to ensure we can communicate as robustly.
