Researching mines in northern Spain I came across this curious object. It's a canary cage designed to keep the canary alive in the event of a gas leak. If a miner saw the canary laying at the bottom of the cage it was time to abandon everything and leave the mine, but not without first closing the latched glass door and opening the valve of the oxygen bottle to save the bird. A miner would do that on their way out and take the bird with them. It's a signifier of the miner's legendary sense of solidarity, no lives lost to the mine on a miners watch. A solidarity that was also crucial in the fight for workers rights, creating safer and more humane working conditions, achievements of unionization and solidarity that some of us still enjoy today.
What would you do to have power? Kevin McCarthy’s answer? Anything. (Thursday’s NY Times: https://bit.ly/3inAMOa) #SpeakerVote
Zeynep keeps saying wait for Epi data
And When Dr. Al-Aly's epi data came out which proved "novelty is severity" is a false rule, she refused to accept that Epi data.

@TonyStark House leadership has been determined by money (donors) since LBJ.
This current situation makes sense given the nihilism of libertarian donors. If authoritarian regimes finance Republicans, that would also make sense as US ineffectiveness benefits them. Though technically illegal, I'm not sure policing of finance is effective given Citizens United.
Someone likes McCarthy. His attribute is money (donors). But, perhaps, money (donors) are happy with failed US governance.

@popcornreel Republicans heard that from RR and turned off their brains on issues such as public health.
@popcornreel Based on last year, 18 of 25 adult books. This may be because my book club and wife strongly influence my reading.
The books I read to my 7 y.o. daughter tend to also overwhelmingly be written by female authors, who seem to write all the books-- Creech, Yang, Tan, Pope Osbourne, Park, Watson. Peter Brown is the male exception.

Ice birefringence. This is a natural phenomenon. The ice looks gray to your eyes, but when you look at it with a polarizing filter you can see rainbows. This occurs everywhere there is ice. It's easiest to see on an overcast day. Find thin ice sitting just above a liquid puddle, Check it from all angles and heights using a polarizer. Spin the polarizer while checking from every angle and height. You'll likely see the rainbow colors of ice birefringence.
I see a lot of people asking about verification. I know it's early days but my preference would be if institutions, such as universities, institutes, media outlets and even companies would run their own closed instances. That way a member of that institutions identity within in it is de-facto verified.

COVID booster: consider Novavax
PSA: There is clinical data suggesting that the #Novavax #COVID vaccine, which uses a protein platform rather than mRNA, is more protective against recent strains of COVID than any of the mRNA vaccines, perhaps by quite a lot.
Therefore, if it has been more than four months since your last mRNA booster, you might want to consider getting a Novavax booster. I'm planning on it when I'm due for my next booster.

Yes. Every single person who's actually studied biology properly and understood it agreed with you and said the same at the time.
- We already knew from coronavirus experts that immunity to coronaviruses wore off in 4 -6 months.
- We know how evolution works.
This was SO predictable. Many, many people predicted it.
Any biology or medicine professor who claimed otherwise should have their tenure revoked for misfeasance and malfeasance, and be fired for cause.
As XBB1.5 overtakes the world...
I told you all this would happen
Infection-based immunity was less powerful than infection-based evolution
I was right
