In the US, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service provides one of the most accurate forecasts available. Even though that's the case, they are forbidden by law from creating a smartphone app.

You can thank weather forecasting cable channels and websites for that. Even though they use NOAA's data, they didn't want competition from the best weather forecasting service. So, they bought themselves a law and that means worse service for all of us.

JWST Sees the Same Supernova Three Times in an Epic Gravitational Lens

Thanks to a powerful gravitational lens, astronomers were fortunate enough to see the same supernova three times in a distant galaxy. The lens is the galaxy cluster RX J2129, located about 3.2 billion light-years from Earth. When examining the region, researchers noticed that one of the lensed galaxies is duplicated three times - and they all contain the same supernova. Because the light took different paths, the same supernova is seen hundreds of days apart, showing its evolution in a single image.

Occasionally, someone posts a tech trick that I try.

For a while, my posts here mirrored at bird. Now, if I share at bird it posts to here. Is it bad to RT a post here that originally showed up at bird? If we were mired in the replies it might confusing, so I don't generally do that.

Is a bird post always different in character from a blog or article link?

Politics is well represented here. Some topics are not.

Simon and Schuster has put up a billboard in Times Square to advertise THE LEVEE! I’m so grateful for all the support they’ve given my novella. I hope you have a chance to listen to it. If you do, I’d love to hear what you think of it.

I still remember when I caught Scott Adams red-handed around 2010 making fake accounts on MetaFilter to pump himself up, acting like he was a fan posting random fawning comments. I told Nick Denton and he published it all on Gawker, then it came out he had more sockpuppet accounts on reddit doing the same thing, arguing in favor of Scott Adams and his brilliance.

He's always been an awful human being.

@ProPublica fans: I urge you to read this dark, lengthy story about a child who died.

Why? Because you'll feel better afterwards.

Counterintuitive, I know. Readers are burnt out on bad news, we're told.

But burnout isn't just about bad news. It comes from a sense of powerlessness over events.

At its best, then, long-form journalism can disarm bad news — by illuminating the structural forces and human actors at play.

And this is some of the best I've read in a while.

After the Jan. 6th insurrection, Donald Trump refused to be briefed on classified intelligence about the attack. Trump actually left office without ever being briefed on classified intelligence again.

We're getting CIA records to see why.

Throughout Trump’s presidency, his conflicts with Indonesia were especially egregious—and we just found out that he made $14 million from his business interests in Indonesia while he was in office. This should be major news. citizensforethics.org/reports-

Two more shovellings complete.

That morning one was a doozy though. Does doozy translate to 12"?

Three Zoom calls today and everyone is just going to have to deal with my hat hair and wind-burned cheeks from repeat shoveling. ❄️

Forecast says two more shovellings. Even if it adds up to 18", it is not so bad divided by five.
