Isn’t it depressing that “Hunter Biden’s laptop” is still somehow a thing? Apparently some people hear those words and get agitated, or excited, or angry. In a Pavlovian way? It’s mystifying.

Here’s David Corn, for perspective: mastodon.social/@DavidCorn/109

Inspired by a lawyer friend posting something similar: is there a community of Mastodon users who are #sociolinguists (or otherwise use #sociolinguistics in their work)? I never really talked about my work over on the birdsite but I might want to here.

I'm a prof at the University of Alberta (currently in my 26th year, oof). I was trained as a variationist back in the day but these days am interested mostly in language and identity and language ideologies, and use primarily qualitative methods.

There are Oath Keepers and Proud Boys who could testify truthfully, if they were so inclined, about their coordination before January 6 with Donald Trump by way of Roger Stone and others. Maybe it’s time. rawstory.com/merrick-garland-t

All right #Mastodon, show this #twitterexodus refugee what you can do.

Walked away from 6700 followers because I won't provide content (not directly, at least) or be in the same space as a destructive & dangerous narcissist. This new (for me) place is cool but I do miss being able to post a special #nature #photograph & know it will get seen thousands of times.

I guess that's my #introduction. I rant about #covid #CovidIsNotOver & #LongCovid & I live in a beautiful place. With a foot of snow.

Fascinating thread showing articles from the 80s about HIV & AIDS. This one in particular is eerieky similar to the public health messaging now. Mild & then you recover. Until we know more about #sarscov2 long term we need to remember it’s a NOVEL virus, #MaskUp & protect others. I'd like to do an intro. I'm Edmon, and I decided to join this server, as I've been closely following the pandemic conversations on twitter. I am so deeply appreciative of the pandemic information from many of you that are on this server!

As a few other things about myself, I'm currently faculty at NC State. My research is at the intersection of nonlinear dynamics and information theory. I'm working on some new types of oscillator computers for edge devices, as well as some music research.

The Pro Publica article is "not inconsistent or contradictory" to examinations by scientists, which conclude covid has natural origins.

I like these kinds of responses because I can say a thing from MLK about the value of legislative solutions:

"It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me, but it can keep him from lynching me, and I think that's pretty important also. It may be true that the law cannot change the heart, but it can restrain the heartless, and this is what we often say we have to do in society through legislation."

18 mph on Ayd Mill Road. Winter driving is officially more scary than covid (to most).

The great thing about Eloi Mumps is that he's inspiring a whole generation of kids to abandon the cliched, age-old ambition of accumulating vast wealth. If he typifies the empty outcome of such aspirations, why would anyone bother?
The cautionary tale of a billionaire's folly.

The thing that blows my mind, when talking with industry colleagues, is the default assumption that the pandemic will end. I have yet to talk to a colleague who considers the possibility that this level of transmission/severity could continue indefinitely or worsen. #LongCovid #CovidIsntOver #MaskUp

I told you all covid would prematurely age T cells and in 2020 said, "kiss much of your naive T cells goodbye"

This paper discusses the immunodeficiency that comes with age and how aged people have few naive T cells

The paper also notes Tn loss in HIV

God, I love a good @pluralistic turn of phrase. 😁

A week after joining Mastodon, I can make some comparisons. #Twitter is driven by outrage, anxiety, attention-seeking, and the fascinating spectacle of mean banters. It’s addictive, high adrenaline, and unhealthy, both at the individual and collective levels. #Mastodon is fueled by curiosity, kindness, and simple wonders. It’s more peaceful, sometimes a little boring, but it can also create real human connections. You don’t feel like you need to take a shower after reading a few posts.
