I'm older so I remember things. Everything you see happening today should be understood this way:
The top tax rate used to be 90% in order to prevent the really rich from destroying democracy.
The corporate tax rate was 50% because corporations exist to serve society.
AND the inheritance tax was really high to keep family dynasties from gaining power over us.
📰 "Lessons must be learned from Christmas travel woes" – Good overview of Via Rail's Christmas meltdown. I know it was partly the weather, and partly that Via don't own most of the track they run on. An extreme situation for sure, but geez, rail travel in Canada sucks and so do customer protections. https://www.transportaction.ca/national-news/lessons-must-be-learned-from-christmas-travel-woes/
A nearby house installed a heated driveway this summer.
The melted snow refreezes on the sidewalk and street, making them treacherous.
Evidence that for some, the price of electricity is way too low. Additionally, this project was permitted by our progressive city council.

More Tex Talks Battletech Charger art today.
Poor Charger picked a fight with a rough-looking pack of Heavies. And, they can probably keep up with it.

No one is likely to notice when or where the last internal combustion engine chuffs its last chuff. After all, do you know where the last steam engine was finally retired, or the last horse-drawn delivery cart?
Absolutely. Stating something like:
"The policy you are advocating for will hurt the working poor and benefit the wealthy. My opponent hasn't done an economic analysis."
is seen as an affront in neoliberal circles.
Whereas:
"My opponent is so passionate, but doesn't understand the realities of politics. His politics will change as they get older."
Is lauded with applause and whistling. The more condescendingly you can insult someone's intelligence, the more 'civil' you are.
Where can I learn the history of present-tense historicizing?
By this I mean gestures (by scholars, journalists, artists, victors, victims) toward the surrounding world that ask or answer, "How will capital-H History view this moment?"
When has that been more or less of a thing? Why? With what hope? With what results?
And the followup:
Am I correct in perceiving a modern feeling that we move too fast and dumb for History's paltry justice to be meaningful, now or in some eventual future?
To reduce its carbon footprint, the city of Montreal is going to start favouring vegan food at its events and venues (in French)
La Ville de Montréal favorise de plus en plus le végétarisme lorsqu’elle organise des évènements et incite ceux qui gèrent des espaces de restauration dans ses installations, notamment dans les grands parcs.

Born in 1928, in Montreal, John Little studied at the #Montreal Museum of Fine Arts under Goodridge Roberts & Arthur Lismer.
Little's works often depict Montreal & #Quebec City's historic buildings and grittier neighbourhoods before they were ravaged or gentrified.
We’ve always needed safe infrastructures for people, but that need is even greater as vehicles have gotten bigger.
More cars, bigger cars, more and more space surrendered in cities to cars.
In 2000, a bike-rider next to a Toyota Camry had 18 inches on either side. Today a bike-rider next to a Ford F-150 has just 4 inches.
Stolen space.

A study by the Angus Reid Institute examined the favorability of Conservative Party of Canada leaders Pierre Poilievre, Erin O'Toole, Andrew Scheer and Stephen Harper.
