Cooker: "NRMA vaccines are a scam!"
Me: "They're called RACV vaccines in Victoria"
Cooker: "Dictator Dan calls them something else? Typical! They'll still kill you but"
Me: speechless.
"The Defence Department has bluntly opposed growing calls to strip or otherwise reduce the unilateral power of the prime minister to send the country to war or enter armed conflict without parliamentary approval or oversight."
I think the Defence Department can go and get fucked.

Creeping police state
Did you know: there are protesters in Australia who allegedly committed acts that just a few months ago would have been legally considered minor traffic offences, yet who are now facing months or years locked up, and are currently under bail conditions that effectively prevent them from going online at all, from being able to contact many/most of their friends, and who are subject to the complete loss of any right to privacy (being able to have all their devices searched by police at any point, and they must share any passwords)? And all this without yet having been convicted of any crime, while awaiting trial for alleged offences that just nine months ago would have most likely been resolved with a fine of a few hundred dollars.

Pretty specifically said the book so I’m assuming from his Opus Dei tats that’s the Bible. Surprising choice, getting clocked in the scone by a hardbound King James wouldn’t be my preference if I was acting to threaten everybody’s way of life.

@vanbadham Elon Musk is trying to turn Twitter into a replica of Parler, and he wonders why the app stores are thinking of blocking it?
The alt-right genuinely think that free-speech is their right to spew hatred and anger into the discourse of everyone else. But no one else has the right to say "shut the fuck up" or outright refuse to listen or platform them (de-platforming is no less an act of free-speech in reality)

Striking from WaPo:
Under Elon Musk, Twitter has slashed its anti-propaganda team, allowing a "flood of nuisance content in China" to blot out the "flow of news about stunning widespread protests."

1.Shrinking ad revenues means fewer resources to fill more blank spaces.
2.Squeezed MSM thus elevates flakey opinion, speculation & manufactured outrage over fact.

This is off the chain. Google made $400k selling ad space to climate deniers targeting people looking for information about bushfires in Australia. Outrage! I don’t get the verification kerfuffle - given it’s promoted as a core issue by Elon, categorise it as a red herring.
It doesn’t slow or curtail incitement, disinformation or abusive behaviour - realDJT etc.
I think it’s a tool for targeted advertising and, in this country made users an easy mark for politicians to sue for small slights.
I know who to follow based on their track record. My trust in what they’ve said comes from track record not their social security number.

I don’t engage much with the other social media you’ve listed other than specific subReddits. But I haven’t seen them anywhere like as effective at disseminating and attributing importance to ideas/ventures & news. And that engagement then impacts noticeably in the real world.
Musk didn’t underrate it - it’s either a stupid 44 billion dollar vanity move or it’s worth that much to get it under his control (I actually think its mezzo-mezzo on that one).

Twitter punches well above its weight (combined user mass), at least here in Oz. Given the saturation, content and attention of journalists, academics, politicians and activists engaging. Their concise thoughts are easy to see & digest - barely obfuscated by ads or owner promoted content. It’s easy to curate your follows to get the cross section you want.
