Under the American Rescue Plan, the expanded child tax credit slashed poverty in half.

Manchin and the GOP let it expire and child poverty spiked by 41%.

President Biden’s budget would make the credit permanent.

Folks, child poverty is a policy choice.

Every study ever: Overworked employees are less productive. Employees who work from home are just as productive as employees who work in the office. The evidence is indisputable.

Managers: I see. But I have a hunch that the complete opposite is true.

Considering that these days we have actual neo-reactionary loons who wish modern Western society to revert to absolutist monarchies, I feel I need to publish a folk tale collection at some point that highlights just how villainous nobles could be.

My current idea for a title is: "Noble Names, Wicked Hearts".

A man files a wrongful death suit against the women who helped his ex-wife obtain medication for an abortion. He is seeking $1M in damages.

We are entering the modern day equivalent of the Salem Witch Trials.

I took this photo a five minute walk from my house. I'm in awe that I live so close to such natural beauty.

This is a young double-crested cormorant.

This one is really worth seeing in higher resolution than mastodon allows. Here's the full-size image: carlbergstrom.com/upload/birds

To be clear, the "Wire dog crate" was a 10'x20' chain link dog run. She's actually taking a nap in a 4'x3' dog crate right now, and barely fits.

So my dogs have a 1/2 acre fenced dog park. It is about 60ish degrees today, and I have to work online today. A nice day to stay outside, right?

Sky, the malamute, was complaining earlier about being outside but then stopped. All of a sudden, she's at the back door. Did I leave the gate open? Has she learned how to climb fences? Did she eat through the fence as she did with an 10x20 wire dog crate?

No, she dug a 5' long by 3' deep hole and tunneled under the fence. And crap, the dogs have both lost their tags.

Please Sky--don't pull this tomorrow while I'm at work! 🙏 🐕

So, this is fun. We are their worst nightmare. Turn's out Mastodon "falls short for businesses" because it lacks "advertising support," says an ad industry publication.

CMSWire: Facebook Is Better for Business Than Mastodon. Here's Why >>> cmswire.com/digital-marketing/

"Social media has become one of the most powerful tools businesses can leverage for advertising... Mastodon, on the other hand, does not offer an advertising platform to businesses."

😂

@mastodonmigration This amuses me, and so telling on the mentality of those marketing teams.

They’re so used to being able to dictate and force their message in front of people, and see the resulting metrics, that the whole idea of having to interact with (potential) customers as equals just doesn’t seem to compute for them.

If they adapt, I think a lot of businesses could do well here. People discuss and boost stuff that they like and find interesting. Word of mouth at scale.

I love #librarians

After the Patriot Act was passed, it was #librarians who stood up to government intrusion.

They are at it again - this time protecting the right to read. I have made this article available for all to read.

‘The most common response I get when I talk about dark matter is: “isn’t this just something physicists made up to make the math work out?”
The answer to that might surprise you: yes! In fact, everything in physics is made up to make the math work out.’

Norwegian story of the day: The Sámi activists in Oslo, protesting windmills on their traditional grazing land, needed chains and locks to lock themselves in place. So the BDSM guys in Scandinavian Leather Men donated what they needed.

hay, blind Twitter hive mind. Do we know anyone doing accessibility at Tompson Reuters, specifically working with Westlaw? There's a very, very frustrating bug in Westlaw search which is impeding legal research by blind lawyers and accademics, and TR support doesn't care.

The Dilbert guy hasn't exactly kept his white nationalism a secret, but he finally came out and called for the resegregation of the U.S., and in response *hundreds* of newspapers cancelled his garbage comic strip this weekend. He believes that zero newspapers will carry his strip by Monday. I hope he's right. washingtonpost.com/media/2023/
