Why aren't ISPs that are bringing fiber get the same red carpet treatment as somebody bringing a new factory to a community?

About yearly, we seem to get another article saying "look! #BigTech are the biggest contributors to #OpenSource". These articles come across as PR pieces since they point to data saying who is the biggest contributing company without putting it into context. Like, does #BigTech contribute 0.5%, 5% or 50% of all activity? Instead the talk about things like "the top leading corporate contributors", leaving out non-"leading" contributors, non-corporate contributors, etc. theregister.com/2023/02/24/who

@Raspberry_Pi@raspberrypi.social Why are you recommending people head to Twitter? Are you guys racist assholes too?

What's wromg with having people come here to Mastodon? You're sleeping with dogs over there, and you're inevitably going to pick of the fleas of guilt by association!

@druid It's also a trap for developers. With free software, you have users, and some of them may have the ability to help you fix bugs or may contribute code (not all of them, though - in most cases the vast majority of your users will not be coders or developers, and developers shoot themselves in the foot when they don't recognize that. The exception is if your software is a tool primarily used by coders and developers).

However, with paid software you have CUSTOMERS. And CUSTOMERS feel they have the right to demand your attention. After all, they paid their hard-earned money for your product and if it doesn't work the way they expect, then you had damn well better hop to and fix whatever the problem is, or they will leave you terrible reviews and do whatever they can to make you sound incompentent, lazy, or evil. And that will have a negative effect on future sales!

I realize I am generalizing and there are exceptions and outliers that don't fit these patterns, and especially with free software you will still have a few demanding users, but you can ignore them if you choose to because it's not like they can affect your sales. They may, with or without justification, persuade others not to use your software, but that won't take any food off your table or leave you shivering in the cold.

I see lots of people commenting about the release of a new #Mastodon client for #iOS #iPhone and asking the dev:

Why is it free? Why don't I have to pay? How're you going to monetise this?

It's really odd how people just accept the Apple way of paying over the odds for something they could get for free on #Android. Android has several fantastic open source clients, which fits really well with the general Mastodon ethos. #FOSS

Apple is just marketing over substance. Better alternatives exist.

This morning, I find myself wishing we got #Ubuntu #GNOME back. Not even as an official flavour, so it can stay away from Snaps and deliver Flatpaks out of the box alongside a vanilla GNOME experience.

I remember it fondly.

I like #Fedora, but there's something about Ubuntu that just *works* on my hardware.

Head of Twitter Blue, Esther Crawford, was just fired from Twitter. This is her first tweet since the news broke.

I’m not jeering or mocking her.

But her “optimism” was a mistake, and her hard work was pointless. Sounds harsh, I know.

Elon Musk has no loyalty to anyone but himself. And his deadlines were arbitrary.

Getting laid off is tough but this is a learning moment.

I hope Esther spends time with her her children, and treasures those moments with family.

"We don't do that here" is one of the best community management phrases and it's even more powerful when used by a fellow community member.

Big Journalism bans racist cartoonist from its own media but continues to support an extremist who defends him racism. Media hypocrisy has no upper boundary when it comes to confronting -- that is, not confronting -- what it means to stay on Twitter.

Last night the 11yo broke down the Google Slides middle school Chatroom for me:

1. At first they used a Google doc but the infinite scroll was too chaotic
2. In the slide deck each new slide is one “post”—some all text, some images, some both—
3. They use slides’ comments feature to “reply” to each other’s “posts”
4. This allows participants to easily flip between posts using the slide thumbnail navigation, so they can find the conversations they care about easily
5. He owns the file & if anyone spams it, deletes other people’s posts, or gets nasty, he can revert the file to its previous save state & remove the spammer’s access
6. He did share the file with me on purpose, I think because he was proud & wanted me to see what he’d made

Essentially they’ve created a chatroom with moderation in Google Slides, so they can get around the school’s ban on platforms like Discord. It’s kind of brilliant

“Is there nothing anybody would say that would cause you to cease your association with them? If so, then what you are is not a proponent of free speech, but lazy amorality.“
This piece is so good.

I've been asked what Mastodon client I use on my Android phone. It's the web app's mobile view in Firefox.

When I have the choice, I ALWAYS prefer the mobile-web version even if an app has more functionality. Most apps spy on their users, and my mobile browser is pretty well locked down to prevent that.
