How do algorithms decide what content you see online? Is there really no way to prevent the misuse of social media to spread disinformation and hate?

Online platforms must be transparent and accountable for what their algorithms decide to promote. It's time we make this happen.

Starting today, we're setting up a European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency in Sevilla, Spain. This is one of the many measures in our new #DigitalServicesAct.

We want safe technologies that respect our rights and values.
Also when we are online.

Our Declaration on Digital Rights and Principles will make this crystal clear.

Today, we are one step closer to making it a reality.

Executive Vice President Vestager explains why 👇

I felt moved to write a lawyer’s ode to humanity- does it count?!😆

Patel was a bully
Johnson should have banned her
She gave not one shit
For her duty of candour

But if you thought she was bad
You should meet Leaky Sue
Her number of failings
Is many, not few

She dreams of deporting
Men, children and females
And she discusses it all
On her personal emails

She spurs hatred for migrants
Lawyers leave her fumin’
I’d love our Home Secretaries
To act like they’re human

On the occasion of the death of #VickyPhelan, one of Ireland’s most effective campaigners, I was reflecting that the problems with state behaviour she highlighted aren’t different to the problems of the Mother & Baby Homes, the Magdalen laundries, the infant organ retention scheme or the State’s tactic of dragging out catastrophic birth injuries with denials of liability for years.

The common thread is the State’s view of citizens and itself as more important than them.

Relieved to hear that Alaa Abd el-Fattah is alive & drinking water again. But his fight for justice & freedom is far from over, & our Govt's recent silence on the case is alarming – Ministers should be accelerating, not slowing, efforts to #FreeAlaa

@FreedomForAlaa @Monasosh
RT @sana2: I'm so relieved. We just got a note from prison to my mother, Alaa is alive, he says he's drinking water again as of November 12th. He says he'll…

George Eustice(Tory MP) admits the Australian trade deal is crap.

"The Australian trade deal is not actually a very good deal for the UK.. the UK gave away far too much for far too little in return."

I find myself in the same position I was in during the early days of the birdsite, wondering what to post. Don’t want to be political or polemical in these early days, but mustn’t be too bland either. Not going to show you the scones I baked, share my latte art or describe my sourdough starter. Nor should I plug my current productions just yet. Easy enough to know what we don’t want Mastodon to be …

… anyway, that’s my current thinking

To this extent I'm really interested to know how the age breakdown of people on the #Fediverse. On one hand it would seem to make sense to me that most people here remember the "old internet" before the centralization and they're here to rekindle that flame of independence. On the other hand the youths are generally pretty up on this whole technology thing. I grew up on the internet and since then smartphones have become even more ubiquitous.
