Aurora borealis on Jupiter, imaged by the Hubble telescope on Sept 29, 2022.
See the odd, comet-like streak at right? That's the magnetic imprint of Jupiter's moon Io! Its volcanoes spew out fumes that create their own aurora display.

@stephanie_wyeld The choice is clear! 🧀

iOS users, do me a favour? I’m plagued by a weird bug in Text Replacement/Swipe to Type.
If I have a word as a phrase in Text Replacement (doesn’t matter what the shortcut is), Swipe to Type will *not* produce that word if I swipe it. It will pop in almost anything else but that word. See the video for what happens when I add entries for “type” and “word.”
I’ve tried to reproduce this on my girlfriend’s phone, and I get the same behaviour. Still an n = 2 is kind of a small sample. Can you try this on your phone so I can see if it is a general bug and not just limited to our house?
I use StT all the time, but the bug means I can’t do simple things, like trying to correct “mom” to “Mom” or “teh” to “the” (which autocorrect is abysmal at).
Figured I should explain this here in case folk are wondering why my finger is often in my photos - I have scale bars tattooed on my index fingers, the lines and dots are 5mm apart and they’re super useful for quick field photos 😅 Demonstrated here with some gorgeous crinoidal limestone from Fife 🏴
Finally got some more data of the Orion Nebula. This is about 60 min of data. Still observing, but I was too curious and started some processing while data capture continues.
Amazing how colorful this is, even without any filters and color compositing. #astrophotography
These striations were formed by the movement of an ice sheet that covered parts of Fife around 20000 years ago (which is actually very recent 😅). As a glacier flows it drags along sediment and other debris at its base, scouring and abrading the underlying bedrock.
The presence of cross-cutting striations indicates at least two different directions of glacial flow 🧊
@piratenpanda @petewalkden Haha, the theme song for Superman: The Movie leapt to mind as soon as I saw the picture 😄
Firstly, I'd just like to say thank you to all the people who have liked, boosted and commented on my images, and to all the new followers I have. It's rather humbling. 😊
Today's shot comes from a magical day in the Scottish #Highlands, a few years ago, when I was photographing red squirrels.
These charming characters are incredibly agile and can jump great distances between trees.
Here I managed to capture one as it appears to be flying down my lens.
Lovely shot of the #Artemis1 Orion spacecraft from three days ago, with both its NASA & ESA logos in view on the European service module, & the Moon in the background.
Image taken by one of the highly-modified GoPro HERO4 Black cameras placed on the end of each of the four solar wings.
Rotated by 90° as done by ESA over on the bird site relative to the original from here: https://flic.kr/p/2o2iezg
(And yes, I know 🍆🤷♂️🙂)
@QuiteFunnyGuy “But he's a billionaire and he could potentially do something to help this poor planet...” Aaaaand that’s why we tolerate billionaires? He’s in it for himself, plain and simple.
(I know, I know… I saw the #humour hashtag… I just think Mother Earth should swallow him up 😄)
Retired Chem/Physics/Earth Sciences teacher. I'm interested in everything.
I like a good debate that introduces me to other perspectives. I don't waste much time with people who devolve to name-calling or insults, aside to call them out on it.
I think society performs at its best when we take care of others, especially the weakest among us. That means a strong social safety net, with "free" healthcare, education, and public transit. It's a dream, I know.
30+ years of explaining stuff to teenagers has left me with some habits... I'm not a mansplainer, but I *do* like to find ways to 'splain stuff to receptive ears 😊
I like dogs, cats, and astronomy pictures with a bias towards the shorter wavelengths (kinda leaves out all those lovely Hα pics 😄).
The first thing I look at when shopping for cars is headroom/legroom. Saves a lot of time.
