Looking through old images I came across this one I took in 2010 in the Grand Canyon, back when I lived in the US. Before I visited I thought "ok, it can't be as spectacular as people say, they must be exaggerating". Boy was I wrong! It's impossible to convey with words or images the sheer size of this landmark. #LandscapePhotography
This is a big problem for Mastodon.
Canadian journalist Erica Ifill just had her mastodon.online account suspended without explanation. She's been sharing stuff critical of Mastodon re: intersectional issues.
I get the decentralized structure and idea that each server has its own rules. But this Reddit-style moderation, where moderators with god-complexes make mysterious and arbitrary decisions, is going to cause people migrating to Mastodon to flee in droves.
Not only is the far side of the Moon not "dark," it is actually brighter than the side that faces Earth. The far side has far fewer maria (dark basaltic plains), so it reflects more light than the familiar lunar face we see.

I bet you’ve heard of Galileo & Hubble, but what about Henrietta Swan Leavitt?
Leavitt changed astronomy. She figured out new ways to measure a star’s distance from Earth & her work helped determine the universe is expanding.
Her boss, Edward Pickering, published her findings UNDER HIS NAME. Later, Shapley used her findings to determine distances around the Milky Way w/o credit.
Leavitt’s work is still used today. So next time you hear about famous men in #science share her remarkable story.
Ford is only in it for himself and those that control him.
Beyond the medulla there’s not much else happening n Doug’s head.

Students came back from the pandemic facing huge shortfalls and needs. Instead of building up the system to help overcome these impacts Doug Ford decided to short change them even more.
He is not in it for the kids.

#Artemis I is at the Moon!
Just a few hours ago, it completed a flyby of the #Moon, coming within 130 km of the surface.
During the flyby, it completed an outbound powered flyby burn to enter a distant retrograde orbit that will carry it to 431,000 km away from Earth.
It will be making a second distant retrograde orbit insertion burn later today to place it in its new trajectory.
#NASA has a press conference later today to tell us how it all went.

Yet we are on the receiving end of angry letters from a vocal minority, people organized via anti-mask Facebook groups, swearing and threatening. We’re talking health crisis while they’re talking “liberty.” I can’t even.

Retired Chem/Physics/Earth Sciences teacher. I'm interested in everything.
I like a good debate that introduces me to other perspectives. I don't waste much time with people who devolve to name-calling or insults, aside to call them out on it.
I think society performs at its best when we take care of others, especially the weakest among us. That means a strong social safety net, with "free" healthcare, education, and public transit. It's a dream, I know.
30+ years of explaining stuff to teenagers has left me with some habits... I'm not a mansplainer, but I *do* like to find ways to 'splain stuff to receptive ears 😊
I like dogs, cats, and astronomy pictures with a bias towards the shorter wavelengths (kinda leaves out all those lovely Hα pics 😄).
The first thing I look at when shopping for cars is headroom/legroom. Saves a lot of time.
