PSA, VSCode / VSCodium C# opt-out telemetry

The v2.0 update to the C# extension silently installed a dependency, the .NET Runtime Install Tool extension, that has enabled by default.

pushed the update to users in early August, and it reached / users a month later.

There is no indication that the dependency respects the `telemetry.enableTelemetry` setting. You can opt out:

"dotnetAcquisitionExtension.enableTelemetry": false

But personally, I've chosen to uninstall the Ionide, C#, and .NET Runtime Install Tool extensions.

Opt-out is not consent.

The UK safety bill just passed. It is outrageous what governments are doing to control everything that happens on the internet.

It is very simple to understand. "Encryption protects everyone or no one." There is no such thing as a backdoor just for good guys.

One other thing is that developers are rightly mad at Unity.

However, all gamers should also be *extremely* mad at Unity because the only way they can enforce their proposed license is carefully tracking user behavior in a deeply invasive way.

Dear Fediverse:

I'm wanting to reach out to #gaming fans who have personal challenges that make some - or many - games difficult to access for them.

Visual acuity issues. Hearing loss. Dyslexia, or missing limbs or anything else.

I'm planning an article on accessibility features in video games, and would love to hear stories from people for whom those features aren't merely a convenience, but necessary for them to be able to participate in the hobby.

I'd appreciate help reaching out on this.

@pancake it's called medium because the content is neither rare nor well done

about a year ago, unity merged with ironsource

today they claim: "we can efficiently track installs of your project, trust us"

this isn't worrying at all, not even a tiny little bit

Every time I hear "AI" I've been learning from @jonny and @Mer__edith to replace it with "surveillance technology."

This morning, listening to Maxine Doogan and Tara Burns talk to Doug Henwood about their recent report on the use of surveillance technology (marketed as a weapon against sex slavery, but generally ineffective against that) to control, track and harass sex workers (and nonwhite trans and genderfluid women, even if they're not doing sex work):

@indrora Use Codeberg, give them money if you have it.

If feasible: Host your own Forgejo.

In-between solution: Have www.gna.org/ manage a Forgejo+#Woodpecker for you. It's money, but it's the same level as a managed Mastodon setup.

Loads of projects with actual money could do this but are still on Github. CPython *moved* there from independent hosting.

I was going to say "recently", but apparently I'm An Old and the "recent" event was 6 years ago.

An iOS app is being tested with #SkyBridge that allows the use of Mastodon apps with #BlueSky

What do you think if we contribute so #Fedilab can also benefit from this bridge?

This is really cool: About ten years ago, a few friends and I built the first #Matelight, a very large display made from crates of glass bottles stacked up sideways, with adressable LEDs stuck into the bottles from the back. Now Hito Steyerl, a renowned artist, used a Matelight inspired by the actual one we hacked together back then at c-base as a part of one of her installations, called "Green Screen". Here's an article on the exhibition, and a photo:
