Where art and medicine collide

2023 brings us a free exhibition of photographs of medical objects from the Royal College of Physicians' museum stores: Unfamiliar

The exhibition gives a new look at objects from the RCPs' museum collections through Theo Deproost's photos and Debbie Jegede's clinical curiosity.

Assessment of the quality of meta-analyses

Because meta-analyses are increasingly prevalent and cited in the medical literature, it is important that tools are available to assess their methodological quality.

For clinical trials, a check to see if the analyses follow the QUORUM (Quality of Reporting of Meta-analyses) guidelines is advised.

A short-hand approach found that 4 key areas are important to the quality of meta-analyses:
- data sources
- analysis of individual studies
- meta-analysis methods
- interpretation

In-flight emergency for patient with syncope on plane home tonight from vacation. Used cuff to check BP, but no pulse oximeter in kit!

Stethoscope not great so I put my @Apple watch on the patient to check rate & rhythm. Very useful ❤️

I can’t stop thinking about the Afghan girls Robotic team knows as Afghan Dreamers. The girls with minimal resources were able to design and build low cost ventilators and their expertise were used during Covid crisis. Roya, a member of Afghan dreamers was ranked among Time’s 100 most influential people for her work in building internet classrooms in Afghan high schools.

Literature reviews using free apps

I'm sure medical writers know not to use Google Scholar as their only search in a literature review. Always use a database such as PubMed. I would not use .

#StarTrek or cancer treatment?

I had my first session of radiotherapy this morning for #breastcancer. I'll be undergoing 15 fractions with an integrated boost to the tumour bed. I'm nervous about potential side effects, but determined to document my experience. Stay tuned.

I want people to know that breast cancer doesn't have to be scary or fatal when caught early. Check your breasts, and trust your body.❤️

Rosalind Franklin’s research was crucial to discovering DNA’s double helix structure 🧬 but it was James Watson & Francis Crick who received the credit & Nobel Prize.

Unknown to Franklin, the pair saw her unpublished data & X-ray diffraction images, inspiring their famous model. They never acknowledged her contribution until after her death.

How many discoveries & innovations of #women do we attribute to the men who took credit for their ideas?

Obsidian. The basics.

In a great thread on the blue bird app, Mushtaq Bilal PhD has provided just the right amount of information to start using the Obsidian note taking app (link below).

twitter.com/MushtaqBilalPhD/st

With its ability to hyperlink between pages and provide a visual overview of the relationship between notes, Obsidian looks like it might be very useful for visual writers, and a contender to replace OneNote on my desktop. And, according to Obsidian help pages*, there is a way of importing your OneNote and EverNote books into Obsidian. Now, if only I could learn how to send emails to Obsidian...

Here is the link to the download page:

*The app's help pages are difficult to understand for those of us with no coding skills at all.
